My friends ESS disappeared through the one and only hole in their garden fence last Tuesday afternoon after a rabbit. Although her other younger dog went with her she came back but there was no sign of the older one.
I spent much of last week trying to help her look for her but there has been no sign of her. Her land backs on to other gardens and land including woods and lakes. We have combed the woods and checked the lakes and my friend has put posters through all the doors of people who have gardens that surround the direction she went. We have walked up and down the quiet lane which is the first road she could come across and spoken to various dogwalkers, homeowners and farmers in the village.
My friend, her husband and their 3 young children are devasted
I am gutted for them. How can they can they move on from this ??

They must be going out of their minds with worry
Make sure they have registered her with Doglost
also it is very important that they go in person to the local holding kennels where strays are taken by the local council and check for themselves that she is not there........a phonecall is not enough.
i hope they find their girl

on the upside it's early days and I really hope she is found safely soon.
If she is not found I don't know how you would ever get over it cos there would always be a part of you that would be looking wouldn't there?
I agree with Dawn go in person to check the holding kennels. I have read so many stories where people are told their dog is not in the kennels but then they find the dog is there all the time
Everything crossed here your friend finds her dog.
Is the ESS chipped or tattooed and did she have a collar and tag on?
As Dawn says find out which kennel the local warden takes strays to and see them in person, then any other shelters/pounds that are in their area.
CJ went missing some years ago now and I did this, I got a phone call 4 days later from the shelter the warden uses, they wanted to check a chip number and it was CJ, so it can and does work (someone had tried to book him in while they went on holiday and just happen to have used Leigh which is the local one)
Also as Dawn said, put her details on Dogslost, the more people searching and keeping an eye out on dog walks, the more chance of finding the dog and getting her home.
Not so long ago there was a story here of a dog found and returned home after 5 years!, this was a dog myself and another member (sadly no longer with us) had helped search for without success, so, it shows that things can happen even after a long time.
Don't give up hope! I know of dogs who have turned up after weeks and even one after 3 months!
Apart from Doglost, call in or take posters to local vets, and ask a bit further afield. It's astonishing how much ground a dog can cover, especially if running after prey and then potentially getting disorientated and running in the wrong direction.
How about good old FB? A couple of photos and a plea will get her picture to a wider audience and you never know.
Good luck xx

I am pretty sure she was chipped and she definitely had collar and tag on, so in theory if someone found her they would have a contact number.
Her dogs often disappear after rabbits but always return shortly afterwards.
My feeling is that she has got herself injured or at worst she is no longer with us. We all think that if she could have got back home she would have done. She isn't a dog who would wander for the fun of it
You'd be surprised Chloe, a dog spooked and running scared can turn feral and un-trusting of humans very quickly, don't let them give up on her, the chances are she is lying low. Shady was recaptured 5 days after going missing, other dogs weeks, they tend to circle around the area they go missing from and can go for miles.
Put posters up, contact the radio station, get her on dog lost, if she is alive she will be sighted and eventually found.

Definitely she needs to register with Doglost.co.uk as soon as possible if she hasn't already done so, they'll also create a poster for her and notify any of their helpers in the area.
If you have access to Facebook take a look at the 'notes' section on this group:
There are several of the Doglost documents on there which give advice on what you need to do when your dog goes missing (postering, scenting etc.) and who you should be contacting.
Not only will they send her details out to local dog owners etc., they can advise the owners on the best ways to find her.
I would say it's very early days and to keep looking/hoping. Many dogs are safely reunited after longer - and much longer.
Do they have posters up everywhere? (as well as going through people's doors) Postering is generally one of the most effective ways of finding missing dogs.
Sometimes people stop and see a stray dog and help, but the dog gets taken out of the area.
Definitely agree with the comments to visit local kennels/rescues in person because dogs get missed/misidentified at times. One person's description of a dog isn't always the same as someone else's.
If you use facebook, get sharing the details on there. Many dog owners set up a facebook page for their missing dog which helps to spread the word.
If you look through the Doglost Reunited page, you will see just how many dogs are reunited with owners. Sadly there are some who aren't, but many are, so keep thinking positive
Definitely try Doglost. I think there is a fee for doing a big publicity run but they will then fax all the local kennels, vets etc with a poster. I think you can put the basic lost advert on for nothing though.
There will be a local co-ordinator for Doglost and a whole network of helpers and volunteers who will go out searching and postering for you.
A few years ago I was involved in the search for a border collie who went missing from a local motorway service station after being frightened by gun shot. She belonged to someone known to my trainer and I had a BC at the time so I really wanted to help, especially as there had been sightings in my area. Her owner searched for her day in day out for months and travelled miles in the hope of finding her. However it was not to be. She has never been found, even 3.5 years on, though I think of her every time I walk in the woods where she is thought to have been seen. She was very timid and avoided people anyway so the chances are she turned ferral. Her owner eventually got another dog but still continued to look for the lost one. Very sad for her.
I think the not knowing must be terrible. At least if you know they have died you can move on without forever wondering "what if?".
