Im sad but I need to share this as I finally feel like Im making progress. Ive had alot of problems with Woody getting over-excited when he sees other dogs.He thinks all dogs are his pals and wants to play with every one we meet. Even when he was smaller he got so hyper at puppy classes I found it hard to control him. Well Ive been working really hard with him on his obedience over the last couple of months and today was the best yet!

I took him to the park for some off lead training. Just after I took him off his lead another dog came in at the end of the field. Woody turned and got ready to bolt and I called him back straight away and he CAME BACK!! He then carried on with his training off lead, he was a bit like a kid trying to finish his homework so they could get out to play and went from his sit stay to down stay without me asking! By the time we were finished the other dog had gone and I was so happy I was jumping about telling him how clever he was. I know this is something a 14 week old pup instead of a 14 month dog should do but for me it was so nice to come home smiling instead of close to tears! Im sure if anyone had went past the park they would have wondered about the sanity of a 43 yr old woman jumping about because her dog had just done as it was told!

Hopefully this is the start of better days as at home Woody is the best dog I could wish for.x

well done to both of you - I know how you feel, it took China 7 months to decide she would do what I wanted when I wanted!

Woo hoo! That's superb, well done to you both because I know how much effort it takes from the person as well as the dog, it took me a long time and is still a work in progress with my boy who's nearly 2 but entirely my fault and yes it feels so good when they get it. WTG Woody. Very Happy

Well done you. Buddie is nearly 10 months and this is an ongoing issue with him.
I can sometimes make hime wait and leave and say no, if he see another dog. However on many occasions he just dives off.
I am like you but when he was smaller he was perfect at doing this and wouldn't of dreamt of leaving my side. Its a definate work in progress and glad its not only me!
I will keep trying , good luck xx

That's brilliant!

Don't be self deprecating - doing that with a 14 week old is much much easier than doing it with a 14 month old. Big achievement - well done to you both wav

Well done with very big bells on to you both! Max is 9 months and we are only just able to attempt a sit, wait, and ok release so we can let him off lead to play - up until now it was a major lunging, wrestling contest, so your achievement is huge in my book and I look forward to the day we can do that too Smile

Thankyou all so much for all your encouragement Very Happy Its so good have people who understand.

There had been days when it had briefly crossed my mind that I couldnt do it anymore, after many skint knees, bruised elbows and staples in my head from being pulled over(Woody weighs 40kg and Im 50kg) but I felt like Id let him down by not training him properly. Ive learned its not only aggresive dogs that are dangerous but out of control friendly ones as well. I was speaking to a woman last week who had had her knee dislocated by a friendly lab trying to say hello!( It wasnt Woody btw)

He still has a way to go and Ive still to get him to stop jumping up on people who speak to him. Any advice on this greatly appreciated!

Bonnie xxx

Ahh I know this so well! Mylo is 12 months now and him charging off to other dogs, and people, has really frustrated me. Like you I have recently started to see signs of improvement. He knows sit/down/stay/wait perfectly well, in fact at gundog training he is fantastic and leaves the other dogs alone as he knows they are not interested.

I had him off lead at heel yesterday and he ignored several dogs although I could see he was desperate to go, ears up, furrowed brow etc. But he did it and it was so pleaseing.

I share your joy!!
