Thought I'd give a quick update on how I'm getting on with this. I changed from drop to give. I started doing this in our training session on Sunday and giving her a treat when she gave me the toy. Then yesterday when playing in the garden with her, I forgot and asked her to drop and she ignored me as usual. However, as soon as I said give she gave me the toy!!! I couldn't believe it! She did this about 6 times all without a treat (just a play with the toy). She then reverted to type and started playing tug, so I did play a bit of tug with the tug toy, then stopped playing.
I'll have to see how things go again today, but I'm hopeful I may be getting somewhere at last

I have no idea why anyone would tell you such a thing, as that piece of advise couldn't be more wrong if it tried.
As you've seen for yourself, if you pull on whatever the pup has in it's mouth, this turns into a Tug of War game...and that's all it is...a GAME...It doesn't mean the pup is Dominant or will try for World Domination if you let it "Win", or any of that old bunkum which is STILL being spouted by some people (including some trainers apparently ). It is just a game which dogs enjoy playing with humans and with other dogs.
I'd go back to offering something higher value when asking her/him to Give/Dead/Thank You/Whatever command you use. Plus, if whatever it is in her mouth is of no consequence, then I'd give it straight back, as nothing gets a pup running away with their contraband more quickly than having everything taken off of them.
So for now, praise her to the High Heavens for holding something and showing it to you, then swap it for something better and/or give it back if you can.
