I guess if there was a magic solution it would have already been done by some organisation or other. I have to say having thought about it all I think Celine and Fee are totally right the best thing is to have the stickies that are already there now and to signpost people where possible. No change needed, its just I kept reading posts asking for help and I know how I thought I'd researched it all before we got our pup then after joining LF much later realised how much I'd got wrong or not known that made me just want to help people who were also in that situation to get advice not to get pups.
Thanks for your thoughts. |
what I would say about stickes, you can have as many as you want - quite often people STILL jump in and ask the questions.
In addition, some people quite simply don't want to hear what they are told and will become defensive or go away as a result
We developed the Labrador Health website for this very reason with LF's blessing - and there are still a few people who recommend it - but certainly not as much as they used to
It's a well visited site with some useful information on there - it doesn't cover the practical elements of breeding, but it does talk about the health tests and what to look for when buying your next pup - it's referenced across the internet from many of the main websites - and also covers some of the sadder scenarios that people have faced as a result of buying pups from unhealthtested parents

Sorry Paws, I think I misunderstood your original post. Most of the info is there, and can be found if you look. As already mentioned most people will ask first, and then be ppointed in the right direction.
However, you have touched on a great point. That is a mentor. One of the experienced breeders who would be willing to mentor a first timer. I found Di's help invaluable for my first litter. I also had help from my bitches breeder too. This was 2 resources on whom I could call when I started to panic about whether things were going smoothly. I was very fortunate to have had a mating, whelping and weaning without any real problems. The only issue I had was Mum not eating for the first few days after giving birth. this was were a mentor like Di was invaluable. The quiet calming voice telling me it will be okay, and what to try next.
