Trouble is dogs don't play by our rules. You use a human word like trust, he doesn't understand that.... a human child you can explian 'be good I'm TRUSTING you' too, and then express disappointment if they don't 'keep their side of the bargain up', but dogs don't work that way or understand such things.
never 'trust' a dog in a human sense, they will only let you down because they didn't know they had a side of the bargain to uphold in the first place
Like telling a one year old you are trusting them not to wet their nappy then being disappointed or angry if they do. they never understood in the first place.
Don't set them up to fail. They will only disappoint you (another human only word).

Dan I've had to put Olly back in his crate at night and during the day when I'm out. He stopped using it at night at 5 months old and was an absolute angel (he only chewed as a baby). But three months ago I adopted Sophie and now that Olly has a partner in crime, together they've eaten a sofa cushion, a paperback, the wall, the back door, a pair of shoes...and they stopped being clean overnight because of all the mucking about!
Out came the crate, Olly needed no encouragement at all to use it again and the destruction and mess have ceased...bliss! He loves the crate and sleeps in it in the day out of choice. Save yourself some heartache and expense!
Following recommendations on here, do try antlers from stagbar - the dogs love chewing them and they keep them occupied for hours - they don't smell either.

Max is nearly 9 months and he is always crated when we are out - no problem for him, he chills out and goes in willingly and sometimes stays in there sleeping when we get back and open the door. I leave him in the dining room when I have to be elsewhere in the house. It has glass doors so i can check on him, a very old table he has never chewed, and I make sure there is nothing left on the table he can reach, or damage, or damge himself by eating. He now generally sits in his bed by the door and snoozes until I walk back in, but I would not trust him in the lounge on his own - just too much temptation.
When I started to let him stay in the dining room, I would leave him with a kong, or chew toy or a carrot, so he associated my leaving him as a positive thing, and he would settle after that. Now I just walk out and he's fine - but always minimise the risks
