Bailey barks at night still !!! we all go upto bed, bailey settles on the sofa then about an hour later he starts barking he only stops if I come down and he is ok as long as he see's me, i've tried ignoring him but he doesn't stop so I come down don't speak and go back up to bed and he is ok for another 2 hours.
We tried him in our room but he won't settle and paces up and down (laminate floor) tried him on the landing but won't settle there either, don't want to put him in kitchen as Jenson will be able to see him and Jenson doesn't make a peep all night so don't want to start him off, tried leaving a light on/radio on and it makes no difference either.
The last couple of weeks he has growled when i've come down I just don't understand it at all.
I'm going to get a baby monitor as a last resort but don't want to keep buying things I would rather know why he is barking and try and work with sorting it out
I have a crate in my room. My own dogs sleep on a dog bed in my bedroom and any fosters that dont settle and cry/bark I pop them in the crate with a 'teddy-dog' for company and all (so far!!) have settled. May be he is worried completly on his own? The other thing I have done is to leave the radio on very quietly (Radio 4 as talking seems to sooth better than music)
It can be very nerve wracking when they dont settle !!!
It will get better
Bailey isn't a pup though he is nearly 5 so he has been settled for years but this behaviour has only started within the last few months so totally out of character. No Mary i haven't mentioned it to Lizi as she is helping me with Jenson so didn't want to take advantage of her as she is helping alot with him. Baileys behaviour doesn't seem to affect Jenson once he is in bed he is sound asleep till morning thank god
Hi I read somewhere to stop a dog barking you need to teach it to bark on command, I will post a link to the article if I find it xx
Our female dog is very dominant, we used to let her on the sofa but her behaviour began to deteriorate so we decided no sofa and she's back on track now it might be worth your while doing a trial where he stays on the floor and see if it helps xxx
I've ordered him a dog bed so when it arrives i'm going to get him to choose that instead of the sofa Last night i covered him up in my dressing gown and he barked once so fingers crossed i'm hoping it's not a one off.
Pickle and Mojo will often let out a woof or two in the night. But then we have lots of foxes which roam round our garden and street, so I think it is them which sets them both off.
Can he see out of the windows? If so, perhaps getting some sort of blinds or thick curtains would help. I'd try leaving a radio on too, so he can't pick up on the little noises outside which could be spooking him.
Sam started waking early and barking when we moved - he's nearly 2 - then I realised there is a milkman round here there wasn't where we lived before and Sam felt the need to tell me the milkman was at the neighbours' house! I've put him back in his covered crate at night with a nylabone, tuffy toy and blankets in the lounge instead and touch wood that's sorted it so maybe something similar would work for you. You could try the baby monitor trick too so you can tell him to be quiet without actually getting out of bed and see if simply hearing your voice say 'its ok, go to sleep Bailey' or something would help, in the motorhome my Mum just says that to Sam and the little bugger goes back to sleep, doesn't do that for me though!
