[B]
hiya everyone i am really jsut looking for some advice my 3 year old girl bailey is expecting her first litter and if i am honest im little worried about the whole thing as its due to happen prob within the next week been to vet she has been scanned and check in good health just really wondered if anyone had any advice they could share with me would be great even some of your own experiences would be an advantage so i am a little bit more in the know about what to expect .
Preparation, you need to have everything ready and to hand, stay calm, your bitch will know what she is doing, let her take the lead but be on hand to assist when needed
Di wrote me a great Piece, hopefully she's still got it and can post it for you.

Very happy to email you the sheets that i did 'Daisy' above...? Either drop me your email, or mine is wylanbriarlabs@aol.com and send me one and shall pop them to you by retrun by email.
They cover pregnancy, whelping, rearing etc.
I would say though, to anyone planning a litter, lean on your stud dog owner. they hopefully are experienced and can offer you all sorts of help and advice. Don't be afraid of asking.... you don't just pay a stud fee you should be paying for a stud 'service' IMHO....
Best!

She bred from her two pet dogs - says in her introduction post
very exciting for you, did you get them both hip/elbow eye tested etc.. ?
look forward to seeing the photos when they are born x
thanks for your replies i have sent you a wee email Diana, so you can email me you sheets i would be ever so grateful, It's all very exciting. The breeder i got both my dogs was a very close family friend and sadly passed away on the 20th of july this year, He was going to be ,mentoring me through it all if thats the right word, As he had been doing it for years. So any help or advice i could get would be fabulous and i promise pictures once they are all here.
Happy to give you another "first timers" point of view, but not sure how useful that would be !!! (Lorna was pregnant when we adopted her as a Rescue and we found out 6 days before she whelped.)
I'm so sorry that your mentor died. You will need someone to call on for advice, see whether your vet practice has anyone experienced in whelping who you could have a chat to. The vet nurse I was put through to for help had obviously never seen a whelping herself, so having a breeder to answer all my stupid questions was an absolute god send !
As has already been posted the key is preparation and knowing that you have everything ready to hand as although the preamble is slow, once she gets going you won't want to leave her side whilst you go off searching for something. How are your preparations going ?
I have to say I was lucky as Lorna had done it many times before and knew what she was doing - it was me that needed hand holding. If you have any specific questions then do post them up, have you subscribed ? You will find the depth of knowledge on the forum is indispensable.
my advice would be pay your £10 to become a member!!! Well worth the money as allsort of things crop up that you may not know the answer to!
There are lots of breeders on here who will be able to help you with advice as they have experienced many many litters!
When Molly had her first litter I was a bundle of nerves despite having vast experience of c-sections and rearing puppies I had never seen a normal whelping before. I posted upteen questions (and some more!) on here and everyone here gave me great advice.
Please do post your email here for Di to send you her sheets as they are easy to understand!! You will read them many times!
for now... I would suggest getting the following ready:
1)dopram (for resuscitating puppies with)
2)umbilical clamps (just incase!) the bitch should tear the umbilical cords herself. I found it useful having them - I only used one on a pup that had a retained placenta.
3)cheap flannals. - for reviving puppies with and/or cleaning them up. easier to handle the size of a flannal than big towels!
4) glucose powder for the bitch - to give her energy
5) cheese/goats milk to get extra calcium and protein into your bitch
6) nutri vits for the pups
7) colustrum and powdered milk INCASE you have to rear them yourself (and bottles with teats)
nutriplus gel for the bitch as an additional means of getting vitamins into your bitch when already having to feed lots of extra meals.
9) towels to keep handy
10) torch for trekking round the garden in the dark when pups are coming!
11) vetbed - best bedding possible!
12)whelping box
13)notebook and pen
14) write your vets telephone number down in obvious places! so if you are in a rush you can find it easily!
15) heatpad/mat to keep puppies warm!
16) toys for the puppies when they are a bit bigger!
17) nail clippers for clipping the puppies nails. buy human little clippers! they are much easier to use than big dog clippers!
1 nail brush to scrub your hands with
19) hibiscrub to wash your hands with (for the whelping)
20) normal hand wash for general purpose use and also hand cream as your hands will get sore from constant washing!
21) disinfectant for cleaning the whelping box with
22) bin liners to hand - to get rid of all the soiled paper - easier to keep on top of it at the time!
23) kitchen towel
24)weighing scales for the puppies!
25) a tub that can be used as the hot box (keeping pups warm during the whelping) this tub can also be used for bathing when required.
