Hi just in the process of changing Jenson over from kibble to wet food, he is on 90g x 2 of kibble but what would that work out at with tinned food, on the tin it says 1x 1.2kg tin a day but it looks an awful lot Laughing I'm sure Jenson won't mind but don't want him getting too much either Very Happy

Does anyone else feed tinned food ? if so how much would you recommend ?

Thanks Sarah

I have fed tinned food in the past, but always mixed with biscuits, so I can't really compare the amounts.

You have to remember that most wet food is about 80% water, so if you want to feed the same amounts as dried, you'll have to try to work out out the weight by removing 80%. That said, most dried foods are full of Fillers, Sugar Beet Pulp and other fibres, plus many are full of grains/carbs, which you don't get so much of in tins, so yet again it makes comparisions very difficult.

I'd say, go by the recommended amount (and yes it will look like LOADS) and then adjust it from there by keeping an eye on his weight. Just like you do dried food really.

The other thing to remember is, as wet food is so full of water, he'll hardly drink. So don't worry if you don't see him heading off for the water bowl very often Wink .

Back in the days when I fed tins my dogs on average got just over half of the recommended amount. But none got near the amounts on the tin. But it does vary so much with the dog that you really need to find out from experience.

Regards, John

I've never fed wet dog food, but I have sometimes fed the cats tins or pouches. For my cats, the recommendation would be 4 or 5 pouches each per day. They only ever get 2 each and that's been more than plenty.

I took down my post as the change of food is for behaviour control rather than skin itchiness, so didn't want to confuse things.

Sarah, sweetie, pleeeeeease ask me if you have any questions about what I have suggested for Jenson. As someone said in your last thread, you are going to get a whole load of conflicting answers one here, so please email me if you have a question, not post it on LF.

Feed him according to what it says on the tin for his weight, minus 20%. Then halve this for the amount for one meal. If you tell me what it says on the tin, I'll work it out for you Smile

Ah just seen that it suggests 1 x 1.2kg per day, so less 20% this works out at 480g for one meal. It will look a lot, but remember that it is wet so some of this weight is water - 90g of soaked kibble looks huge too Wink

So see how he does on 480g for one meal.

For general info, the reason for Chappie isn't just to see whether this helps his skin - feeding a wet food can also (in my experience) help greatly with certain behaviour issues. Some dogs just don't digest kibble well, and due to Jenson's trigeminal nerve issue on the left hand side of his face, he doesn't drink well and washes a lot of saliva (which contains digestive enzymes) out of his mouth, which is not good if he's just eaten a kibble meal. With a wet meal, he won't need to drink after so all that saliva will be swallowed, not washed out.
