Hi All,

I was hoping you would be able to help me, today i was in my local pet shop and explained that my little girl may be pregnant and he explained that all puppies would be black as black is the dominent gene and brown is a recessive gene. Genetics is by far not my strong point Tess parents were Black and Yellow and Ollies Parents were both brown.

Not that it matters what colour they are i was just curious if he was right and there is no chance of any other colour puppies?

Thanks

Rich

What colour is your lab and what colour is the sire? I don't know colour genetic's but I do know it is based on both parents and people will need that info to give you an answer Smile

It can get very complicated talking colour genetics as it depends if the parents carry any other colour i.e black lab can carry yellow aswell as yellow and choc or it can be a dominant black.

So if you put for example a black that carries Yellow and choc to a choc you would get black pups and choc pups some of the pups would carry other colour genes.

So your bitch could be black carrying Yellow, and yes the man at the shop was right all the pups will be black but some will carry the yellow and choc Gene and some just the yellow Gene. Now if your bitch carried the choc gene then you would have a mixed litter.

Its the same as if you put a dominant black to a dominant yellow all pups will be black but carry yellow.

If you put a black carrying yellow to yellow you would have some black and some yellow.

I think I have that right, Im sure someone with more experiance will be along soon.

Yes Loz damn near.

On paper unless there are quirks carried forward from further back which *is* possible, all pups will be black. ALL will carry chocolate because one parent IS chocolate but none can BE chocolate because one parent does not carry chocolate.

Then because your bitch had one yellow parent she absolutely will carry yellow. And approx half the puppies will inherit that so unless there are quirks (such as your chocolate boy DOES carry yellow through from dogs behind his chocolate parents in which case there is a chance of black and yellow or your black girl with black and yellow parents carries chocolate through from a grandparent, say, being chocolate in which case some of the pups will be chocolate) you will have all blacks. All who will absolutely carry chocolate and half who carry yellow TOO (approx.) So just a tiny tweek on Loz's workings.

Di

Her mum is black and granmother is also black but there was yellow and black in her litter too. Her dad is also black but dont know as much about him. What would happen if i bread her with black.
