Hi All,
I have 2 wounderful pedigree labradors my bitch is called tess and she is 2 1/2 years old black labby and my male is ollie a 11 month old labby. Tess started her season about 3 weeks ago and ollie showed no interest in her what so ever intil about the 16th day after she started bleeding unfortunately on this day he jumped over the baby gate seperating them and locked with tess for 20 mins. unfortunately the same thing happened the day after. my intentions were to breed tess and ollie but to wait until ollie was 1 1/2 years old. from what i have read bitches are fertile 9 days after first spotting is it possible that tess may fall pregnant after a lock on the 16th day. and my other question is at the time of writing this it is 4 days since they last locked and tess seems to be bleeding a more than she was yesterday and it is very watery and red. nothing excessive and she is perfectly happy in herself. I have spoken to my vet who has assured me this is nothing to worry about i just woundered if anyone else had seen this in there labbys. ollie is still attempting to mate with her when they are together under supervision but she will no longer allow him to mount her.
I have bred boxers in the past but never labradors and i would be grateful for any advice you can offer and i apologise for the long post

Tess has been Hip Scored, DNA Tested and Eyes Tested, Ollie has been DNA Tested and Eye Tested but was due to have him hip scored next month when he was 1 year old. both of his parents had brilliant hip scores.
I was about to say I wouldn't use my pet make dog on her (unless i planned to regularly use him at stud in future) as it *can* make them lust for it all the more in future, but that's a bit irrelevant now.
I think getting Ollie hip scored asap like you are doing and before any pups arrive is a good plan, I know another member did similar after an accidental mating.
I believe you're too late for a mismate jab so I suppose it's just a wait and see now to see if she's pg, but with 2 ties when the bitch is willing the odds are high.
Sarah your thoughts on the male being used for stud is interesting [I don't want to hijack this thread],
but that is what I assumed before Bruno came to us, I was nervous as he was an exstud, and thought I was going to have a humper on my hands eager to keep up his good work , I knew I could be in trouble if he was, me not being experienced with that sort of behaviour [only Mischa humping when she is excited ] , but surprisingly he is probably the only one on our walks that has no interest in the girlys.
Not that I have come across bitch in season yet, but he certainly does not seem to have any desire to carry on with his past activitys.
May be he was not really interested in his younger days and that is why he was sacked from his job.
Thanks for your comments I had considered a mistake jab however the vet informed me due to the injection being hormone based it does increase the chance for pyometra. My main concerns is it posible for a bitch to get pregnant on the 16th day of bleeding and is it normal for her to be bleeding slightly more than previous days for days after mating. again im really grateful for all your comments.
Richard I think I have read on here somewhere that it can happen up to 18 days, [rarely] but thought you would get a knowledgible answer from the breeders on here, they will see your post when they are back on.
Thanks for your help June, i have to say I have had several bitches in the past and tess by far has always had heats lasting longer than those of my previous bitches.
Yes it's possible. Also on a normal season the bleeding can ease for the most fertile window and then start up again after that window - which coincides with your girl rejecting her mate now.
As you've had her checked by the vets i'd not worry too much personally - hopefully an established breeder will be along to comment.

That's why I said *can*.
Of course you deal with what you have (and in your case you have a normal happy ex std boy). But by choice with a pet dog, personally, i'd just not risk it for a one off mating - i'd use a stud dog instead.
