I did not want to hijack the last post on breeding Max has a lovely brown under his black coat I love it.
While at the vets the other week the receptionist said he was chocolate and black not pure black. Now I had always believed this was an under coat and Diana mentioned this in the other post I was just wondering is this seen in all black labs as the lady at the vets when I said it was his under coat said I have not seen many like that. Is it down to breeding I thought all black labs have this undercoat.

I don`t know whether they all do Cheryl but Max is most definitely an ALL BLACK Lab CJ has a light brown undercoat but he`s chocolate/liver anyway, I`ve read on here of a fair few blacks having a choc coloured undercoat.
Sounds like the receptionist should be a member here and learn some things about Labs
There are 3 colours of Labs as you know, Black, Yellow (from almost white to dark fox red) and Chocolate (again many shades from dark to very light which some refer to as "Silver")
Luna has brown undercoat, Tucker too although not as brown as Loon. When I furminate there are 2 different shades of black - my carpet just thinks that it is all the same!
it makes you wonder about vets! Coal used to be black black as he had little under coat but he's grown it in the last year and now looks chocolate on his thighs some days

What a load of twaddle
Some people should really get there facts straight before passing comments especially when employed by a vet!
My Darcie has brown undercoat and white tips to her black top coat when she sheds does this mean she is a chocolate/white/black lab
Having said that her mother carried all three colours
Having said that Mischa looks like she's been getting her coat out of a bottle lately, its high lights all over, she does'nt look like a choccy at all.
As you can see Max has the most jet black colouring only when you look on his head do you see the brown under coat I know some people should watch what they say who work at vets I am lucky I am a member on LF and knew it was an under coat just needed confirmation but others do not and could really worry.

Some vet's receptionists shouldn't be allowed out on their own, let alone pass comment on people's dogs .
A Black Lab's undercoat varies from brown to mousy grey. When they are puppies or when they are moulting, this undercoat tends to show, so giving them a brownish/greyish tinge. This has absolutely nothing to do with any chocolate genes, as black with no chocs in their ancestory still have brown/mousey undercoats. If it did, then their undercoat would be more blonde than brown, as this is the colour of a lot of choc's undercoats.

Where do people get their ideas from it's the same as those that believe a brown undercoat means the dog carries chocolate
It's just a good undercoat - pure and simple what colour was his mum? Dad carries chocolate so he has a 50/50 chance of carrying it - but it won't in any way be displayed in his coat colour - it's just pure coincidence if he does
I do wonder about some of these vets sometimes
I can remember after I got Clover, we took her to the vets at about 6 months old as we needed to weigh her for worming tablets - firstly the vet nurse tried to tell me she as fat without even seeing her (I did have to bite my tongue on 'Pot Calling Kettle Black' as she was HUGE making me look like Twiggy - which anyone who knows me will tell you I am most definitely anything but )
Then they tried FORCING her to sit - when I said she hadn't been trained to sit (note correction of this with nos 3,4, 5 etc ) because I was going to show her.
I was LAMBASTED by the vet nurse who demanded to know how I could possibly show a dog who hadn't been taught to sit - she then proceeded to ask me how on earth I was going to lift such a heavy dog onto the table for the judge to go over her
I really do worry sometimes - unfortunately - your vets are not alone
