we were relly lucky - we got Mars at 12 weeks, and he has been fine in a 36" crate at night - no mess ever, and slept well - getting up once or twice.
2 things really helped - we bought a cover for the crate on day 2, and it made it more den like instantly.
secondly, we bought a bay monitor that you can play lullabies remotly from - ie our bedroom 2 storys up! We can also talk to him, and recognise when he really needs to go out, and when we can have a lie in!
all the best. I'm very grateful he doesnt soil his bed - must be hard work. I would never put paper down at one end, because this can only encourage it. Must use a smaller cage, as per 1st post. Perhaps because we got MArs late, his litter training (ie with brothers and sisters) made him not soil sleeping area?
all the best

We had maggies crate in our bedroom for the first 4 nights. We thought it would be easier for her to be near us in the first few days in an unfamiliar place - but she cried every night.
Desperate for some sleep, we moved her crate to the kitchen, apologised to all the neighbours and bought ourselves industrial ear-plugs - and do you know what ? she didn't make a peep all night !
And she has been quiet virtually every night since
Like Diana says, i think they find it more upsetting knowing you are there, but not able to get to you.
On the odd occassion when shes started crying, we have got up. But we do the 'no-nonsense toilet' thing (just in case it is a genuine need - which it usually is), put her back to bed with absolutely no fuss, and ignore any further cries.
Maggie never really took to her crate in the first few weeks, even refusing to eat when we put her food in there. (yes - she is a labrador!)
But now she loves it, and sometimes we even have to close the door to stop her going in there !
