Thank you all for the replies. We are both looking forward to picking up some hints and tips from the forum.
Dexter had his fourth night on the trot last night with no accidents. I just hope we're not lulling ourselves into a false sense of security thinking that he is house trained already. 
My parents went to look at their new puppy yesterday. They've put down a deposit and pick him up on the 13th October - he will be called Alf. We're all looking forward to some fun times with him and Dexter.
Dexter has met Claire's parents dog, Oscar, a few times and they seem to get on better each time. Oscar is very lazy though and likes his own company a lot of the time.

So sorry to hear that your parents lost their dogs so close together. Very sad.
