Hi at Jenson's training today the trainer mentioned changing his collar to a check or maybe a prong collar but not just yet for the prong , I was against the prong but not sure about the check ? He put the check on him and he was good when it was used properly. What are your thoughts on the check ?

Sarah

There is nothing wrong with a check chain if used correctly, after all it is only the same as a Slip Lead, just made of a different material. I wouldn't use one if I thought the dog was going to cause itself pain though, by lunging or pulling.

I personally wouldn't use a Prong Collar at all though, as causing pain in a reactive dog could easily backfire and you end up with a worse problem than you started with.

if it were me i'd walk /run away from any trainer who suggested a prong collar as a way to solve a problem.

check chain /slip leads can be great in the right hands and used in the right way

You could maybe try a half-check collar. I used one as a training aid for Charlie, as he was only taught to lead walk after I rescued him. I too personally wouldn't use a prong collar x

Here is a prong collar. Great idea. Stick it on the instructor first to try it out though.

Amber's trainer has fitted her with a half check collar and this does help with pulling - she does not choke herself whilst wearing it which she did with the flat collar.

The prong collar looks like an instrument of torture ......... Crying or Very sad I would not dream of putting it on any living creature and it would put serious doubts in my mind regarding a trainer that suggested it tbh.

The Kc is campaigning to get both them and Electric collars banned by law.

Really? A prong? You want to put one of these on your dog?

If that is what you mean, I'm shocked to read you say that Sad

If you do really mean a prong, please before you get one, take a read of the statement from Welfare in Dog Training, which speaks out against them. This group includes the APBC, APDT, other behaviour organsations, various animal welfare organisations.

http://www.dogwelfarecampaign.org/press-statement.php

Every vaguely decent trainer/behaviourist I know of is absolutely opposed to them.
