Posted: Thu Sep 01, 2011 2:36 pm Post subject: Watching Working Tests - sorry - stupid question....
I have joined both SEGS and UGS - and there are working tests this and next weekend that I would love to go and watch...... and field trials later in the year.
I would offer to help but am too clueless about competition day procedures - so wanted to watch a couple so I can learn.....
Do folk do this or do you only go if competing? And if so their isn't info on the websites re start time or directions (sure I could manage to find them that's not a major issue!)
Went to the SEGS Fun Day but that was open to all and chilled and friendly and all info on website - or do tests work the same. Sorry meant to ask when took pup to trainer this week but forgot....
The ones I've been to you can't really watch because dogs and handlers are kept in a separate holding area till they do their test and no-one else is present

It depends. Contact the secretaries and explain that you want to give a hand and learn at the same time - I'm sure they should be able to accomodate you. I went on an open test to observe and it was brill! The judge was fantastic and talked me through all the scoring, and set me about scoring the dogs myself before he told me his score. I learned so much from it and it gave me a totally different perspective.
I'm actually competing in both of those tests so if you so come along make sure you say hello
Thanks for posting - will be interested in seeing the answers as it is something I've always thought about but don't have the time at the mo! Just to let you know Kent Surrey and Sussex (KSS) retriever club need helpers for the 11th September - if you look for them online I am sure you will find contact details to enquire...I am busy that day otherwise would go lend a hand.
Given as you are obviously in the south....(hijacking here ) would you be interested in coming to the Hants training session on 6th November - there is a thread about it in this part of the forum....just thought I'd ask!
Are you UGS, W Sussex Surrey & Hampshire. Don't worry about not knowing anything - go and offer to help. I did exactly that when Meg was a puppy. I contacted Paul, said I had no idea what I would have to do, but wanted to help and learn - he was great and they are only too happy to have helpers. Paul is working sec for the UGS WS S & H again so you should have his contact details in your yearbook - give him a call and give it a go. I think Di is helping with SEGS this weekend and if it's UGS K & E Sussex, then I'm sure Julia will be happy to have helpers too. It's a great way to learn and meet people too.
Satsuma, I am helping myself on Saturday. I am certain the sec would not mind you cominf along. What slightly worries me is this is about as high a standard test as you can get, an Open Walked up on Fiedl Trial Lines. If you are using as a benchmark for starting tests its might scare the pants off you a little?? The next day however the UGS kent NDNH and veteran test would be a great insight into what you are aiming towards.
My email is wylanbriarlabs@aol.com. i am at both, one helping, one competing in veteran, do contact and we can hook up. Its essential folks SEE tests before they enter its a great step forward.

Thanks so much for such prompt and friendly replies
Will give the test secs a call and see what they say.
Yes Di - I do think that Sunday would be more appropriate as a starting benchmark..... but having an idea of the eventual level and skills and pitfalls would be so good. Reading and DVDs only show so much. Wouldn't put me off at all - I am fully aware of my incompetence and how much work there is to do if we are to ever reach open level and who cares if we don't - but want to watch and learn. Thanks so much for your offer - will email you).
Thanks Daisy Cathtor and Jem - will let you know how it pans out!
Nik - thanks - will have a look see at the dates....
Its essential folks SEE tests before they enter its a great step forward.
Di
Absolutely agree, I was scared witless about what tests were about till I was lucky enough to be put with a judge on one and saw its not as scary as you imagine
