This always strikes me as a funny old time of year when you work gundogs. Some (Andrew for example) have already probably clocked up a dozen days out picking up. Our shooting season on our own shoot is more than a month and a half away yet. The working test season is still in full swing, but there is a kind of 'end of term party' type of feel to it, as we all smell the season creeping this way.
Sitting down with the diary today, I realised that in the next 14 days, between Allan and Fish, myself Bondy and Mallie we have a walked up on field trial lines working TEST, two Veteran TESTS, a walked up sugar beet training day on dummies, a working test judging appointment on an farm that will be dripping with birds just two weeks before their first days shooting, and two All Aged field trials, so on birds. Poor old Bondy won't of picked a bird this year when he steps into line for his first field trial.... I'm hoping the suprise will be a nice one for him!!!
Warming up a bit yesterday, with a couple of marks, for the Edenbridge Retriever thingy, he pulled left at one point suddenly, scooped a dead rabbit someone had obviously pegged earlier and dispatched (and kindly left in the middle of the field - grin) with a BIG smile on his face.... so i'm thinking we should be OK....
If I turn the page to the week after its even MORE of a mixed bag, so I'm just taking this inbetweeny time of year as it comes for the time being Good luck to everyone for the next few, hugely busy and very important weeks for us all! Time to see if the training works!!
Is it this, Bondy?
Or is it THIS?
Is it THIS Mal?
Or is it THIS?
Or maybe its THIS Mr Fish...?

Great pics Di, looks like everyone is keen and ready to go, I assume you shoot/pick up a different kind of bird and thats why you have a while to go before your season starts?
I know I should know more about the firld and trial side with all I`ve read here, but I get confused
Thats right Mary. We only have pheasant on our shoot and that 'season' doesn't start till October. The field trials run in September, depending on where they are, are either on grouse or Partridge with the odd rabbit/hare thrown in for good measure on occasion

I know how you feel, our agility display season is drawing to a close, we have one performance left and then it is back to winter practice sessions. The team will be open to new dogs (including Cadbury) and we will be working on new courses, so it will be all change.
It does feel very odd, and a tinge sad that all the fun of summer is finally drawing to a close.
I always think of the gundog folks at this time of year and wonder what its like waiting for the shooting season to begin.
Have a great time with all your projects and please, plenty more pics
Haven't done anything this year since Januarys beaters day when I shot 2 birds for about 50 cartridges. Yes I did say that, and no I didn't say I could shoot. Mind you it was on a shoot in deepest, darkest Dorset, and the birds there are HIGH and fast.
Not doing any FT's this year, but am already looking at next years W season for Wispa at Novice, and depending on how they go puppy for the 2 little un's.
We already have 15 days and 2 beaters days for the coming season, so am really looking forward to that.
Good luck Di. Added some pictures, but am looking at a re-write.
Lovely pics - glad to know it's not just Bodie who picks up 'here's one I dispatched earlier' rabbits
The cooler grey days we've had this week have defintely been sneak previews of the season, some of our trees are starting to turn and there is a definite smell of autumn earth in the air...not long until beagling and beating start Sad to have missed the opportunity to give a home to a spaniel that's done 3 seasons picking up - need to get cracking with Daisy's training so she can have her first days at the tail end of NEXT season...after losing heart and motivation a bit over the summer I am determined to have at least one of them picking up in 2012/13 - this time of year, if a bit "inbetweeny", has at least given me the kick up the bum I need to re-focus and take a fresh look at training.
We've just celebrated the end of the year/seasons agility season and have said goodbye to friends we'll hopefully meet up with again in April... it does feel strange! Now they'll be the odd day indoor competition, a battle with the weather to train on out outdoor ground and a sense that it's all flown by too quickly!
Good luck with the inbetweeny bit! Some lovely photos!
I think it's great the southern clubs manage to run tests so late into the summer as well as getting their trials on the go - no mean feat with the amount of work that goes on in the background to organise and run these events.
Good luck with the tests/trials - sure they will go well.
Looking over at a very happy tired black pup who did so well at her lesson today (despite the train on the viaduct overhead at one point ) and knowing that if I can do right by her that she will have a smile like Bondy's
when he is working. Just wish I had your knowledge and your experience - thanks for all you posts on here - they are really helpful. Wish I was as talented as my pup/adolescent/mini-minx. Wish there was a formula for each dog as to what to aim for week by week....month by month...
