Hello, Ive been trying to find the best insurance company as Summers has now run out! Iv found some cheapish quotes but not sure what to go for I want a lifetime cover for her but unsure on some, i have got a quote from pet plan with 3 lifetime quotes £4000 being the cheapest but i dont think 4000 will be enough cover incase? my question is would £4000 be enough or should i go for the £7000 cover for £2 more a month ? It will be £26 a month for the £7000 and £24 for the £4000, the other they have given me is £34 for £12000 cover. I know noone can say yes do that one but please could someone advise me which would be the better cover?
My personal experience is that £4000 per year is not a lot.
You have to consider whether a dog may develop a long-term condition requiring on-going treatment for life. Or maybe need major surgery, or investigations such as MRI scans. At today's prices these costs very soon mount up. You also have to consider inflation - looking at what veterinary treatment may cost in a few years time.
If it's just £2 per month more then I would go for the £7000.
We are with Petplan - and 7 yrs ago I took out the £4000 cover for life policy (it sounded quite plenty back then).
I'm so glad that I opted for cover for life - but at present my dog's routine tests and treatment are running at just under £4000 per year. If something else major came up I would be stuck
The majority of people hardly use their pet insurance (and hopefully you will be one of them) - but you never know!
If I had known in 2004 what I know now, I would have gone for the best insurance available.
Hi yes i have looked around and pet plan is by far the most , i got a quote from John Lewis and it said that it was for a year and not lifetime
per year policys are better than lifetime policys. That means if you get a condition that will be lifelong say epilepsy, then every year your have £4000 limit to spend resets. Rather than a lifetime policy that will give you £4000 in total.
I think that is right anyway
I have Marks n Spencers for all three and its a £7k policy that is yearly. We have been very close to the limit with Pasco. It only takes something like a hip replacement and you will absorb that limit.

I think you might be a little wrong there...
By per year I think you mean annual? If so, after claiming for a condition on an annual, upon renewal that condition will be exempt and you'll never be able to claim for it again.
Lifetime cover will reset amount each year, but you'll never have to 'stop' claiming. So if your dog does contract something like epilepsy (as you mention) a lifetime policy is by far the best, or after the first year you'll always have to pay out of pocket.
I use Pet plan. Over the years they have paid out really well on lifetime - The £4000 is reinstated every year but as vet bills have increased my youngsters are on the £7000 plan and im thinking of changing Millie onto it as you can do that. They are expensive but ive heard bad stories from other companies and at times of stress i dont want the worry of fighting them.

From Christine, Millie, Cassie and Lexi.
Never forgetting Carly and Abbie
I have Digger with John Lewis, I pay £18.80 a month for the £10,000 cover. This means that I can claim up to 10,000 a year from them for medical conditions with that £10,000 resetting at the beginning of a new policy without excluding any pre existing conditions.
Mum has Theo with pet plan but the premiums are more expensive but it also lifetime cover. I think he hs £12,000 per annum cover. I think they quoted me somewhere in the region of £36 per month for Digs.
My understanding of lifetime cover is that you get the £10,000 per annum every annum and they don't exclude on going illnesses.
I went for the maximum cover I could afford and thought was realistically priced in a lifetime policy as if for example Digger became epileptic or diabetic to name 2 ongoing conditions these would need a lifetime of treatment.
We mostly use Petplan but have one with M&S (though I took that out when it was underwritten by AXA, which it isn't now). I took out the £12k Petplan one for Mins and yeah, not cheap!

If you do change to the higher plan, check with them that they won't then rule out existing conditions (if applicable). Our beautiful Cass was on the £4,000 (which we never used anywhere near the limit) and I did ask them about upgrading the policy once but I'm sure they said it would rule out any existing conditions, so I didn't opt for it.
