Rufus is our hero for many reasons. The most special has to be the difference he has made to our son. Ethan has special needs. Rufus has taught Ethan about friendship. I will never forget the day Ethan looked at him and said ‘you’re my best friend’ It was the first time I knew, Ethan knew what a friend was. Rufus got Ethan over his fear of having his hair washed by bathing Rufus. He knows when Ethan is going to have a melt down and licks him which brings him round. When we are out walking, Ethan will engage with strangers if they ask about Rufus, something Ethan hadn’t done before. Rufus is the star of Ethan’s school diary. Ethan loves Rufus so much he will talk to other children about him and share his diary with them. He even got up in assembly to show everyone Rufus’ agility rosette! Rufus has helped Ethan with his speech. If Ethan tells Rufus to sit, he does, Rufus doesn’t care that it’s not clear, he knows what Ethan is saying. This has built Ethan’s confidence.
Rufus has opened up Ethan’s world, he gives so much to all of us but I’ve focussed on Ethan this time because he is definitely our Hero for all he has done and continues to do for our little boy.
Bran spent the first 12 precious weeks of his life in a puppy farm. The conditions he was kept in should really have broken him, but he survived and was rescued before finding his way to us. He spent his puppyhood growing up in the mighty shadow of Flora - my heart and soul dog - who he loved almost as much as she loved him. Bran was an easy puppy, but always a quiet follower who never pushed for attention. When we lost Flora recently, my world collapsed but out of the rubble came a gentle, steady, quiet companion who was always willing to offer himself to absorb my tears in a hug and, as I'm battling on with my depression, he's remained my constant companion who is always ready for a car ride if I need the company, he's my buffer if I can't face people alone and is my dance partner in the kitchen on a good day! Thanks to his poor start, Bran has numerous health problems but he never complains and tackles life with as much gusto as he can muster. Bran is my hero, my brave little soldier, my rock and my friend and I will be eternally grateful for having him in my life.
Grouse my our hero. She has taught me a lot, she is such an easy dog to own, so kind, gentle, willing and happy. I got Grouse as a puppy from a friend and breeder, I had waited 23 years to own my first dog and she was everything I had hoped for. We pick up on a local shoot, she enjoys swimming, she spends a lot of the day out and about, she is an absolutely amazing dog with Henry, my son. She has given me the confidence to get a second dog and a dog who had two previous homes (excluding her breeder) before coming here at 7 months and is more of a handful, having Grouse as a measure and having been taught so many lessons by Grouse I feel more capable of bringing Fern on to becoming a wonderful dog.
Right from the start my loopy loon of a Luna(tic) pup was lively, demanding and absolutely adorable! She is a smart cookie and turns her paw to anything she does with loads of enthusiasm. She has achieved her Gold KC Good Citizen Award, enjoys gundog training for fun, regularly wins rosettes at BAA agility shows and has learnt to do many jobs around the house.
Luna spent her first two years with me at home both overseas and in the UK then a year ago our lives changed dramatically when my ex-husband left us both. Luna made me get out into the world and confront challenges head on whilst making me smile, cry and laugh with her antics.
This summer she has shown me what a grown-up, reliable girl she has matured into as we added a younger brother, Tucker to our dog family. She has taken him under her paw and provided the most wonderful of role models to help him settle in. Luna is loving and excitable, soothing and inspiring. She gives me 24/7 support, companionship and love and she is the bestest girl in the whole wide world.
Tucker has been home 6 weeks. At just 14 months old this is his second ‘forever’ home since being found wandering the streets at around 4 months old. Tucker is the best advert for someone adopting a rescue dog I have ever met. He doesn’t just wag his tail, he thumps it! He doesn’t just lick you, he bathes you! He isn’t just delighted to meet you, he makes you delighted to meet him!
Tucker has begun learning with a vengeance since coming home having had no previous training. Already he has achieved 5th place in his group at a Charity Gundog Day, he has begun to learn how to weave, jump and tunnel on agility equipment and his first Bronze KC Good Citizen classes have gone superbly.
Tucker is a pleasure to have around the house. He gets into the sort of mischief all self-respecting young labs should, loves to run fast, chase birds, swim, play, squeak toys, destroy toys, ‘help’ with household chores and annoy his big sister Luna! Tucker’s life here has just begun but it’s hard to remember life without him! He is the bestest boy in the whole wide world!
MY HERO
Nearly two years ago you lost the use of your legs suddenly after a walk. Throughout the four months, that you couldn't walk, you never stopped wagging that tail and looking at us with those cheeky eyes. You have always been a devil, and always will be. We battled carrying you in and out to the grass to do your business....you trusted us so much, you learnt to go to the toliet laying down. You learnt to eat laying down. You baffled 7 vets...to this day we still do not know what happened to you. We tried pill after pill after pill to find something to help...nothing did, they upset your tummy. That night I made the desision to let you go to rainbow bridge. I lay with you all night crying. In the morning you were so bright and cheery that I just could not make that call to the vet. Thank god I didn't. By some miracle within the next few days you started moving those legs, outside being held by us you started to put one foot in front of the other.....lots of stumbling over in the next few weeks but you got stronger and stronger. Someone came to the door, you got up on your own and greeted them with your goose in your mouth! Now nearly two years on you are walking with the others again...swimming everyday, enjoying life of a spoilt 12 year old labrador. You will always be my hero Dream, and I know me and dad are yours too.
Why is Bruno a hero, well I don'nt want to go into his past other than he came here at 6 years old, ex stud dog and only ever lived in kennels.
This boy has been with us five and a half months now but seems like forever, he has changed our lives and he is our pup. 'OH, you may ask', well he is enjoying being a pup at the moment!
Oneday he will be jogging along like any other 6 year old Lab sniffing the undergrowth and just enjoying his walk, another time he will do the most fantastic bum-tuck he even shocks himself, the rest of the time he is beside me, I am his blanket whether we are out an about or at home.
The loyalty this chap gives out after his short time with us is without doubt the most humbling experience I have ever had. Everyone who has ever met him loves him for his gentleness and cannot resist giving him a cuddle [considering he was classified as being aggresive to dogs this is amazing].
His partner in crime is Mischa, even she respects that he is still learning what life is all about, and allows him to snuggle up or suckle his ears till they are like soggy rags, she knows he has not had her fortunate life and is there ready to show him just what he has missed, I bless her for her patience.
How long he will take to grow up is anyones guess, I am just so grateful he is happy to be with us, he is my Hero.
"Alfie brightens my every day with his calm loving nature and really makes life worth living....
I was unable to get out of bed due to complex illnesses when my parents brought me a bundle of fun home... he literally changed my life. I had a reason to struggle out of bed, a reason to face the world, i had a puppy that needed me, loved me for as much or as little as i could do and never judged me. He was always there for my bad days, a furbaby to cuddle, talk to and cry to. He never let me down right from day 1, my health to him is unimportant and my illnesses change nothing. I've met so many good friends through taking him out and i still struggle but with Alfie by my side we both face each day together and i feel so thankful to him for changing my world so to me Alfie is quite simply my hero Very Happy "
You came to us on New Year’s Eve 2009 as an emergency Oldies Club foster, aged 12, after being taken to a vet to be put to sleep because your previous owner was ill. We fell in love and adopted you!
You were so sad and confused at first, but you were such a brave and determined old chap and soon settled in as part of our family and started to smile again. We had so many adventures together – walks, a seaside visit, and plenty of good food and cuddles. You grabbed your second chance at life with all paws and a big grin on your face.
We told your story last year and won £1,000 for Oldies Club, to help other older dogs. Your face has appeared on the charity’s poster and postcard. I’m sure your story will help encourage others to adopt oldies.
You broke our hearts earlier this month. After surviving a number of strokes, you had heart failure and a tumour to contend with and couldn’t take anymore. You passed away peacefully at home, our brave boy.
You were amazing. We will love and miss you always xxx
