Seems to have been fine last night. Thanks for all the possible causes - but there's def no food, no floorboards (with mice underneath).

He did it a couple of times on his first few nights with us and that's what made me worry that perhaps it was anxiety.

Let's hope it doesn't happen again as we're getting a new carpet within the next few months!

You could well be right about the anxiety [not in a bad way though] but silly things can set it off.

I'm pleased he has stopped for the moment anyway Smile .

It's not an unusual behaviour, digging / nesting is a natural behaviour in dogs.

They can do it when in pain instinctively at times but also when they've been asleep they can wake and dig before settling again - they look awake but i do sometimes wonder as it takes quite a noise to distract them out of it.
Basil spins with his digs too, he can be asleep on the sofa, wake, dig, dig, spin, dig more , spin then settle again Smile
