Hi all - anyone know why Otis was doing this last night?

Got woken up to a strange noise in the middle of the night and came to realise it was Otis scratching at the carpet in the lounge.

From what I can remember it was a 'one-paw' scratch rather than digging with both paws.

He has a lovely large bed which he goes to when we first go to bed but I know he doesn't stay on it and prefers to sleep on the floor. I know he was definitely scratching the carpet and not his bed as my carpet is now sporting a lovely scratchy-patterny patch!

Was he just trying to get comfy? Any ideas?

hmm a bit strange and I'm sure someone more experienced will be along with better answers than me...

but my first thought would be did something get spilt on the carpet? what about the possibility of ants or spiders that he was trying to catch? maybe a shadow so he thought he could see something even though nothing was there? perhaps you could put a nightlight on or an extra piece of vetbed on the carpet and give the carpet a once over with some bio washing powder to elimate some or all of these possibilities! other than that I don't know what to suggest I'm afraid but I hope you get it sorted before the carpet gets any holes. Shocked

Hi. Is there possibly something under there that he can smell? Max was digging at our carpet once and when I looked I found a treat from his treat ball lodged down between the carpet and skirting!! Rolling Eyes But maybe he was just trying to get his spot nice and comfy. Laughing

My GSP likes to scratch and dig at his bed or the floor before he settles down. It seems to be an instinctive thing with him. But he does it all the time, so if it was a one off with Otis then that wouldn't make much sense I guess. Confused

Just a thought, have you got wooden floors under your carpet? Could he have heard a mouse or something scratching around under the floorboards?

CJ does this when I have the halogen heater on, only the though, I think its to make himself comfy, much like they would in the wild living in caves, they dig themselves a shell acrape.

No idea why Otis is doing it though unless he`s trying to make himself comfy, could be he got too warm in his bed?

Barney does this sometimes when he is settling down for the night (sometimes he prefers to sleep on carpet rather than his bed). He also often goes round and round in a circle as though he were flattening down long grass etc to make a bed!

No idea why he is doing it all of a sudden, but it is not an unusual behaviour, I think all ours past an present have done it at sometime.

To save the carpet could you put a mat or piece of vet bed in the place he was scratching, and if you do happen to catch him at it, a quick 'oi' or 'ah ah', just to distract him. I think it is a bit like nest making, hopefully he won't make a habit of it.

My old boys used to do it a lot.I always thought it was them trying to get comfy! Shocked I don't think it's anything to worry about!
Milo has never done it though!
