Hello...
I only recently learned from the forums that not many use Royal Canin as their dog's food. Our Winnie was fed Royal Canin from the breeder, i just continued it. She is now approaching 7mos.
She seems ok with it...stools are firm, not watery and less. Bowel movement is regular too. No allergies and she has a very good appetite. Royal canin maxi junior is also on the slightly pricey side. Also there is almost an identical amount of starch and protien. Apparently, grain heavy not a lot of good reviews around the net. And the argument which is playing in my mind right now is this: Why am i still feeding royal canin if there is an alternative which is better in quality and cheaper that maybe i have never been aware of?
I will just take note of your suggestions and see which food gets the highest number of comments.
I feed my 2 adults and my foster pups Harringtons, lamb and rice or turkey and rice. All fine on it, they do have a web site so you can check ingredients. I pay around £19 -£21 for 15k bag.
You will probably get as many answers as there are members of LF
The most common brands that are used around here are Skinners, Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved, Burns, Chudleys, CSJ, Chappie.... well the list is limitless.
Of those... I would be happy to feed any of the first 5. I would certainly consider the others if budget was an issue, but would favour the first 5 first

I feed both of mine with Skinners Duck and Rice, I buy this from VetUk and it's around £19.50 for a 15kg bag from there with free delivery. A 15kg bag lasts me for a month between them both.
My first thought in response to your post was "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" in as much as if she is doing so well on the food, then why look to change.
That said, I do vary the food I feed mine from time to time but that is more in a quest to find one food to suit all 5 dogs which isn't particularly straightfoward.
We are currently on Barking Heads but I doubt it will be any cheaper than RC (it is £35 for a 12kg sack) but I can say that you don't need as much of it as you do a lot of other foods. Mine are having about 250-300g each a day whereas on a lot of other foods they have had to have closer to 400g a day.

--- hehehe, yeah i think i would. I am currently looking at Arden grange, Hills, Burns and now skinners. The grain free dog foods are good but a bit pricey (e.g. Orijen, Acana, Taste of the Wild etc.) We'll see how my comparison goes....
Many thanks for the other comments.... i will include skinners on my shortlist...

---Hi Vicki. thanks for your comment. i think i am just looking at getting a much cheaper food for winnie with equally or better quality ingredients. i pay £45 for a 15kg bag of RC Maxi Jr. (incl. delivery) and compared, for example, with Arden grange puppy/junior large breed, which has 4% less protein but uses whole grains compared w/ RC's and with a higher calorie content and will only be £37 for a 15kg sack incl delivery. RC's main ingredient is rice and lots of maize derivatives. has 28.5% starch! i think it is too pricey for a heavily grainy food. So, i guess it's just looking at whether i am really getting what i am paying for. Yes, winnie looks alright with RC but she could also be looking as good for something a lot cheaper and with better ingredients
Hi. Had a look. they use as almost as much rice as rice as the chicken meal. although its brown rice, apparently its healthier. Looking at all these common dog foods from LF members, they are pretty much similar and they all don't use meat derivatives which is good.
If all is well with the Royal Canin then I would stick with it, if you want something abit cheaper but similar then Arden Grange would be one to look at (its ingredients are easier to understand than RC's too) At 7 months I would use an adult version rather than puppy.
With my three - Amber has Arden Grange although she will go back to Burns once the AG all gone (I just prefer Burns..), Murphy has Burns and some raw and Leo is on Barking Heads. My dream is to have them all on the same food but don't think it'll happen as they all have different needs..
