Can I just say that this 'jumping on/off' waiting lists perhaps could also be because some puppy owners have been horrible disappointed by some breeders whom suddenly turned around and said: "sorry, but no pup for you and anyway you were number 15 on the reserve waiting list"  I would certainly not be happy if I'd been committed, on one list only and have waited 8 months. I would certainly think about getting myself on more than one list after such an experience..

and that's exactly why I've tried to be honest with people on the list and in some cases, where it was unlikely I'd have enough pups, I've suggested they carry on looking until the litter's here. Some of the potential buyers, on the otherhand, have been less than straight with me, by telling me they'd have, for example, a bitch if there weren't enough dogs then backtracking when I contacted them.
I suppose the bottom line is that where you're dealing with human nature there's no foolproof way of avoiding the pitfalls of selling puppies. Maybe I should just take up knitting instead
