I'm not in any great rush to start on cold game. It's only an afternoon or so, so usually, so with a dog like Amy born in April I aim to work her in puppy in the game conservancy held in July at 15 months old, then introduce cold after that. This gives me plenty of time before the season starts in October.
I dont shoot, so although I use starting pistols quite early in training they dont usually hear a 12 bore close up until shortly before the season starts. I'll then get my keeper to fire a few cartridges off, starting well back and gradually working closer. But the early days on our shoot are quite small, so not enough to overface a relatively young dog. But I'm also in the position that I can choose the quiet spots to stand, so I know there wont be more work than I want.
Regards, John

Celine believe me (and this is coming from someone who for many years mainly trained on her own) it just doesn't work. You have to train in the company of others to get your dog to any sort of decent standard even if it is just getting a group of friends together to train and helping each other.
Puppies up to 12 months I can do alone, but from then onwards you need other people to throw for you, to stand in line next to you, to do walk ups with etc. etc.

I got Grouse happy with the gun by taking her to a clay shoot, when we were living in Devon there was one at the top of the hill above our farm. First we drove past. Then we stopped at the end of the road. Next time we walked up the road and fairly quickly we were in and watching.
Fern has the pops from the rifle (although silenced, so v quiet) and she hears the odd shotgun but not too close. I will start some gun work in another month. When I got her, I did a test, just to make sure she was not going to freak straight away.
I found a clay ground v handy.
