Apologies if this question has been asked before - I have sifted through 6 pages looking for it..

We had Harley (8 weeks today) weighed at the vet today and he is 6.06kg - he is quite a chunky puppy which he gets from his father who looks like a bit of a bruiser! Smile

At the moment I am feeding him 4x 55g per day and I was wondering whether anyone thinks I should increase it? Also I was wondering whether I should be feeding him 3 times per day instead of 4?

He appears to be fine and I certainly can't see any of his ribs. I know each puppy is different I just wanted an approximate amount of grams to feed him per day.

At the moment he is eating half a raw carrot and making such a mess!! Very Happy

It depends what brand of food he is on, as every brand of food has a different nutritional break down.

Start by going by the guidlines on the packet - if he starts to look a little heavy feed a little less, and if he starts to look a little lean give a little more.

There's no definitive amount - every dog is different so just adjust the quantities to suit him Very Happy

It sounds as though you've got it spot on, keep going by the eye and increase or decrease as you feel necessary. I've never fed my pups more than 350g a day at any point as I've been happy with their condition - some of the feeding guides are just crazy and you'ed end up with some very sloppy poops if you followed them Smile

Did you breeder give you advice on how much to feed? I promise chances are they will know their pups they produce and be right. 4 x 55gms of a good quality complete puppy kibble sounds excellent and pretty much bang on. You can probably up in a little per meal in about 2 weeks time, and then at 11/12 weeks reduce down to 3 meals and up it a bit again.

Basically aim for being on around 300 - 450gms a DAY of puppy food from about 6 months onwards over 2 meals or adult food if you swap him over, which is always a good idea for nice slow growth.

Thanks for the advice peeps Smile

I'll keep him on 55g 4x per day for now and keep an eye on his weight and then increase slightly in a couple of weeks.

He was on field and trial puppy skinners but before I got him I decided I was going to change it. I have had him a week and I am half way through changing it to Burns mini bites which he appears to be enjoying immensely!

Is there a reason you have changed it? Was Skinners hard to get in your neck of the woods? Its a very good food...

Burns feeding guide is 20g per kilo of weight a day I think for pups.

It goes down to 10g per kilo for adults.

I've always found it a bit skimpy and usually end up feeding a wee bit more! Smile

I've just checked there website and it looks like they have upped it to 25g per kilo

Yes skinners is a good food but after doing a little research and discussing with Harleys breeder (she is head of research) and a dog trainer I decided I wanted to feed Harley Burns. It took weeks of fretting and researching it but you can only do your best can't you Confused I was told that burns is better for puppies as there is lower protein and skinners is better for adults who need a higher protein. Obviously this is just an opinion so I'm not stating burns it better than skinners just right for Harley and I! Very Happy

If you are feeding Burns at 20g (or 25g) per kg then this would be between 120g and 150g per day for a 6kg puppy.

Overfeeding can cause runny poo, anal gland problems, skin problems and possibly putting on weight too quickly (though this is rare with Burns).

I would reduce the amount of food as you change over completely to Burns but keep an eye on your pup's weight - pop into your vet's surgery every 2-4 weeks for weighing, they shouldn't charge you.

Have you been sent samples and booklets by Burns? If you get in touch with the nutritional helpline to ask about feeding quantities and ask for more information they will send you some.
