Hello all. Wanting to pick your brains again!

Our Sonny went off his food, but then we discovered tripe!! Yippee!! Wanted to avoid but hey ho!

We got the minced tripe and the chunks, which are revolting and I have to get my OH to chop up otherwise Sonny tends to throw long thick chunks of it into the air, all around the kitchen!! Lovely!

Does anyone use tripe? If so in what form and where do you get it from?

Also, we are on holiday soon and he is going to my friend (been there before and gets thoroughly spoilt) but she is not keen on having a freezer full of tripe and all the defrosting, smell and chopping up that goes with it! Can't say I blame her. Wanting maybe a good tinned or pouch version with tripe in it to try out now to see if he will eat it, and wonder if anyone has any recommendations?

I'm sure you will all ahve some great advice!

Thanks

Julie

I believe Butchers do a tripe mix in a can which may be ok for while Sonny is on his "hols", I don`t know if it smells as bad as fresh but I wouldn`t have thought so.

Does SOnny have a crate?, if so try putting his food in there so he doesn`t have the room to throw it around or if he does its only going to mess up his crate Laughing

Yes I thought about the Butchers one. May get a tin and try that.

He doesn't have a crate so he can't only mess that part up! Was more worried that it may land on me, then I would freak out!!! Yuck!

I'm a tripe fan and have fed it for years. I buy mine in bulk, frozen, from a local pet food supplier. It's sort of roughly minced (much thicker than beef mince), although I have fed big hunks of it before. I don't chop it, the dogs just chomp through it, which is great as it helps keep their teeth clean at the same time.

I've got quite used to the smell over the years (although I'd never recommend cooking it puke_r ), but if you don't like the smell and he plays with his food (naughty boy Wink ) then how about feeding him outside.

I do use Butcher's Tripe occasionally, if we are away, etc, but it isn't a patch on the Real Thing and the dogs know it.

Thanks Jules.

He doesn't usually play with his food, but I think it shocked him to have a cow's stomach in his bowl for the first time!! He did have a good chomp on it afterwards though.

Is that all you feed, just the tripe, or do you supplement with something else? Just worried that although I agree that it is good for them, that he may be missing out on some vital part of his diet (apart from a peanut butter kong!!)

I feed it as part of a BARF diet, so no it's not the only thing I feed, although they do have it for breakfast probably 5 days a week.

I did used to mix it with wholegrain mixer biscuits when I had my Lurcher and Collie and this formed the main part of their diet for a good few years, until my tripe supply dried up. Apart from that they had eggs (with the shells), goats milk occasionally, any human left overs and whatever bones I could lay my hands on. They were the healthiest dogs ever. Never a thing wrong with them and stomachs like cast iron Very Happy.

I feed max the butchers tripe and it does have a quite strong smell but nothing really awful. He has a couple of tins a week as a bit of a change from the kibble. He really likes it. Very Happy

Yes I've seen it in my local Morrisons too but avoided in the past. Sonny will not eat kibble on its own and barely if mixed with something and I know he won't starve but trying to find something that he will eat has led me to tripe!

I think I will buy frozen for the freezer and if he likes the tinned (fingers crossed) supply my friend with a weeks worth of that! Otherwise she will no longer be my friend and trusted dog sitter!
