Hi All,
As some of you will know I use my Labrador for deer tracking, but recently I have been offered more and more land where I can shoot ducks, geese, pigeons, woodcock and rabbits so I'm looking to get another Labrador just for gundog work.

My question is, what in your opinion are the best gundogs books and DVD's on the market that you can recommend? I do a lot of dummy work retrieval with Mildred, but I would like to start looking at gundog training a little bit more seriously.

Many thanks.

Hello,

Mullenscote gundogs (Howard Kirby and Annie Buckley) have just released some new DVDs which are apparently rather good - though I haven't seen them myself. I think Chris Green's DVDs are brilliant - he's a great guy, but they are more about shooting as a whole, not just gundog training.
The gundog club http://www.thegundogclub.co.uk/ do some books and training programmes which a lot of people on here have used and find really good. Unfortunately I seem to find that books written specifically for spaniel owners are much better than for labs or general gundogs, which is a shame for us lab owners!

Thanks, Very Happy

I have just had a look at Mullenscote gundogs dvd's and they look rather good and the price is very reasonable. It might be an idea for me to get the Gundog Club training manuals as well. Mildred will pick up all fur retrieves quite happily, but we do it in a fashion that may not be 100% correct; so starting again and learning the correct procedures would benefit both of us I think. Wink

I have heard good things about this book. I haven't actually read it yet but have been looking around for a book that I could recommend to my puppy buyers and a top trainer in the UK recommended this one:

The book is called Gun Dogs: Their Learning Chain by Joe Irving see link

Thank you Rachel that's very helpful, 'Kimberley' I shall add that to my wish list. Very Happy Did you find a calory free drink for the weekend? Wink

Thank you Jill, I have seen this book and also heard good reports. Now that I'm looking to breed dual purpose style Labradors and dogs that can work to the shotgun as well as those that are full time tracking dogs I'm on quite a bit of a learning curve! Shocked

The Drakeshead DVD's are also very good, but rather pricey. If you still have an old video player, they are doing videos quite cheap on their website Smile

Books, The late Susan Scales "Retriever Training", it's old but good.

DVD's, Stan Harvey's "Training the young Labrador" Main problem with is is that you cannot hear the whistle. Obviously you cannot miss the Drakeshead DVD's. Also the Shadowbrae DVD's are good for correcting problems. I think some of the problems are self inflicted, possibly in order to show the way around it, but they are worth it for the field trials training day shoot at the end!

Regards, John

Thanks John.

Mildred and I were out today shooting Grey squirrels and she worked really well retrieving not a problem. However this morning during training she kept creeping forward on the 'stop' whistle command. Shocked

I'm putting it down to my training technique and looking for answers. I think that once I have sorted out my own training requirements Mildred should be fairly easy to train as she is a bidable and eager to please sort of soul most of the time. Wink
