Blimey I didn't realise it worked likethat. I knew about the 7 day thing by I presumed rescues went in and took them and then a decision was made once they had been assessed etc but I suppose there is not enough space, time, money or staff for that.
I know the UK and Ireland are pretty much the same a I don't think England is whiter than White in this - I was asking more generally really.
Thankyou for all your replys, I just want to do what I can to help them, even if I am wasting my time I've emailed Many tears as I know they rescue dogs from ireland, lets hope this helps xx
It's basically this, in Ireland a stray serves 5 or 7 days in the pound this is the time that the owner has to come and claim it, if not it's KILLED, if it's a surrender then the dog can live for 3 days and then it's KILLED.
Simple as that Celine, doesn't matter what breed or age or temperament.
UK has similar guidelines, and yes we KILL dogs too.
The only thing that stands between a healthy dog and a needle is a rescue volunteer willing to go and pick which dog DIES and which dog LIVES this week.
I think in Ireland (some pounds at least) that surrenders can be pts immediately as they are signed over (presumably some kind of check is completed to ensure it's the owner signing them over at least!). They're not all pts straight away of course, thankfully, but I understood they could be
Celine, you're right, not enough space in rescues or the resources to help them all
Just today there's been an urgent appeal on facebook for a Staffie in a UK pound who needs a rescue space. Three of the other dogs at the pound have already been killed. This is why I must sound like a broken record on here asking people if they've considered adopting from rescue, as every adoption potentially frees up a space for another dog to come into rescue. The UK pts rate is meant to be about one dog every hour but I don't think that includes healthy dogs taken by owners for pts at the vet privately, or some of the dogs discarded by the Greyhound racing industry, for example
Ultimately the problem needs tackling at the other end, ie preventing irresponsible people from breeding/selling/owning dogs in the first place, but since that doesn't seem to be improving any time fast ...
My little addition to this is look on LRRSE or others if you are looking to help labs from Ireland, and you will find plenty, if they are rehomed or fostered it will make places for more to be brought over.
I'm sorry if I've come over as harsh in any way in this thread, but I really do have list upon list of dogs all waiting in the pound for a rescue place coming into the rescue inbox every single day and I know that by deleting that post or by having to write back yet again and say that we can't help that I/we could be signing any number of death warrants and it is an awful thing to have to live with but we help those we can and pray for those we can't
As you've said, Celine, England is a million miles from whiter than white and we put down thousands upon thousands of dogs every year simply because they can't get a rescue place or home

Sadly not, the lucky one's are the one's who find a space, it's a lottery on a daily basis.

Our boxollipet (avatar girlie) was taken by her "loving family" to the pound in Ireland to be told that they were full and if the family left her she would be PTS *immediately*. They left her. Luckily for her (and us!!) MT's Irish contact was actually at the pound picking up other dogs due to be PTS and squeezed our beloved Bella in too.
But even Many Tears works with a team of rescues, volunteers and fosterers in Ireland who pick up dogs from the pounds on their PTS day, vaccinate, flea treat and worm them, and hold them for a few days/weeks until they can be brought over to the UK for rehoming. I think it would be very hard and dangerous to try to organise something on an individual basis. I know it's heart-breaking that young healthy dogs are PTS but the best way to help is to foster/adopt from an established rescue, which as has been said many times above makes a space for that rescue to save another dog.
But of course any additional awareness is a Good Thing, so it's great that we're having this thread at all!

I can only urge anybody who is willing to offer foster places etc etc for these dogs to PLEASE LISTEN to what youv'e been told.
Sarah, Angela, and Marie (sorry if I missed another person involved in rescue) KNOW what they're talking about.
You can't just stick your hand up in the air and say "I'll foster one!" because you're taking a dog straight from the pound. Who are you fostering for? All you'd be doing is adopting straight from the pound, and thats quite a risk - particluarly if you have kids or other animals.
The best way to help is to offer to foster for a rescue that takes pound dogs. Then, when you take a foster into your home you're taking a dog that's been assessed, seen a vet, vaccinated, wormed, quarantined and is SAFE for you to bring into your home. When you foster for a rescue; you make a difference to TWO dogs - you help assess the dog you're fostering and hopefully see it rehomed, and you free up a rescue kennel for another poundie to go through the same process.
It's easy to imagine a poor, miserable, lonely, frightened little dog in a kennel about to be put to sleep, and then along comes an angel and whisks the poor little mite to a warm, comfortable, safe home where he's got a full belly and can sleep in front of a toasty fire and it's all wonderful. But this isn't reality. As a fosterer; you work with the rescue and help dogs find their forever homes. It's incredibly rewarding - always. You always know you've made a real difference to that dogs life - and the dog that you freed up a kennel for. Sometimes you get a foster in that just fits at once, and it's very easy. BUT- it can be very demanding - because these dogs very often have some baggage with them and settling them into your own home with your own dogs can be bloody hard work!
I haven't looked at the pictures of these dogs; because I can't help them. And I know there are many thousands, in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales - just like them. All I can do is offer to support rescues and provide them with foster places.
We are registered with Labrador Rescue South East & Central, Labrador Rescue South East, Pro-Dogs, and I'm just completing an agreement with the Oldies Club. And Sarah knows; there's always a place here for a Barn dog in need of fostering.
This is all I can do; if you want to help then register for fostering or be a home-checker, it really is the best way to help.
