Hi,sorry to sound thick, just wanted to know if this is possible.here goes, long story. We were put in touch with a lovely lady who had a litter of 6 yellows and one black, the pups had yellow parents,so the breeder said they dont know how the black pup came about,as it was impossible for the two yellows to produce a black.so she thinks after the mating, her chocolate boy had mated with her and got her pregnant again, not bothered either way as he is beautiful, and i quite like the fact he was the only black, the little surprise born last, just didnt think in nature that could ever happen.I thought once pregnant, that was it,not able to conceive again until next season.hope that made sense,Emma and Teddy xx
Yellow parents must have had other colours somewhere in their history they often do!
my chocolate boy was the last born in a litter of 9 & the only chocolate! all the others black like the parents! but there was a chocolate in the "grandparents"
only explanation that I can see
The breeder is correct that 2 yellows can only produce yellows. And the bitch can carry puppies from 2 different sires, bitches ovulate over several days and release numerous eggs so any sperm can fertilize those eggs.
Have the puppies been DNA tested to determine the parentage of each pup?
____________ I am only responsible for what I say, not for what you understand !
Yellow mated to yellow can only produce yellow pups, so the black pup is a mystery for sure and will not be able to be registered with the Kennel Club.
It is possible for the bitch to mate with another dog and have some pups from one sire and one(or more)pups from the second mating with the other dog. However, I'm guessing it would have to be DNA tested to prove the other chocolate lab was the sire before it could be KC registered.
It all sounds a bit dubious to me. Are ALL the parents health tested?

Nope - it is genetically impossible for two yellows to produce black or chocolate puppies.
The breeder s probably right that another dog (probably their chocolate) 'got to her' - however, if these pups are being KC registered - the KC will require the litter to be DNA tested as there are clearly two different sires (or not beyond the realms of possibility that they are all sired by the chocolate dog if he carries yellow).
More importantly than the colours, are all the parents health tested, i.e. hipscored with current clear eye certificates, ideally one parent DNA tested PRA clear and ideally both elbow scored
Yellows can "carry" other colours, but a yellow to yellow mating can only produce yellow pups and that is the only colour the Kennel Club will accept on the registration form.

Now I had thought that to be the case, but was told that any two same colour Labs could produce any colour pups if they had other colours within their parentage
so that lays waste to that theory then
