Hi there,

My puppy is entirely underwhelmed by kongs at the moment, seemingly regardless of what I stuff them with. I've tried his dried dog food, biscuit-style treats, puppy sausages, dried liver, dried beef, and puppy bonios, to no great success. I wonder if anyone could suggest any other things I could try? I'll freeze one when my freezer starts working again as it's bust at the moment, but I'm a bit loathe to stuff them with too much that's soggy as I end up poking all the food out myself later......

Thoughts would be appreciated Smile

A x

I'd definitely give some wet dog food a go... mine have all been a bit slow 'getting' kongs, but lovely wet smelly dog food at least keeps their interest. I'm using fish4dogs salmon mousse at the moment, just the right size in a sachet for 1 large Kong, it's the best thing I've found.

Peanut butter or Primula cheese fans in our house, mixed with a bit of kibble to make it last longer.

How old is your puppy? Mine wasn't interested until he was about 5/6 months old...just didn't really 'get' them until then it seemed!

ASDA'S own brand chicken paste. Shirley never used to bother with anything else I stuffed it with but this she went mad for. Its about 30p a jar as well...prob never seen chicken in its life though Rolling Eyes . She used to run to her cage in a morning as soon as we opened the freezer.

They dont have much attention span when they are very little so you need to make it super easy for them to get the food out! I usually start just when they are hungry/due a feed by putting a little kibble in and playing with them on the floor rolling it about and letting the food fall out and them to find it.

Like I say they don't just know that these things are the best since sliced loaf! And if the food is to difficult to get out, they will quickly get bored of it. So build up the difficulty of getting the food out and show the pup how to do it Smile

As Fee said, you have to make it easy for them to start with, don't put anything in that is hard to get out until they really know what it is all about.

Is your pup a good eater or one of the very rare labs that isn't all that interested in food?

Mashed banana is another good filling. I wouldn't bother freezing anything until your pup is a bit more enthusiastic and really learns how to empty a kong.

My dog first does the licking bit as much as she can, then she starts throwing the kong around to try to bounce the food nearer to the hole. She loves her kongs.

Some great ideas here thankyou.

We've only had him 3 days, of which the first two he was a little off his food, and is now a bit keener, but still not what I would call mad for it. I've had some success with a puppy sausage stuck in a kong biscuit ball this morning, which was good, but I think I'll just keep working on it. Sooner or later he's bound to figure it out. I'll try making it very easy Smile

Thank you again.
Alex.
