Prepare for loud trumpet blowing .......
This year is Oak's first proper competition season at Agility and he seems to be going from strength to strength, regularly being placed at both Kennel Club and Unaffiliated shows, which often involves beating in excess of 100 dogs of all breeds (mainly collies though).
This weekend we were at KC Club Show run by Axtane, where he got four placings, plus an unplaced clear round. To my utter astonishment and total delight Oak won a beautiful trophy for the Highest Placed Gundog in the Grade 1 & 2 large Agility! To say I am the proudest Mum on earth is probably an understatement!!
Oak is certainly speedy, but, probably because he is hampered by an overweight and unfit handler there are faster Labradors than him. My friend's lovely Lab Skipper is usually about 2 seconds faster. However Oak is a) getting faster and b) is so good at directional control and accuracy that we climb up the places there. He gets higher places in agility classes (4th yesterday, 8th today!) than the fast flowing jumping courses. So it does show that even if your lab ISNT as fast as the collies, don't despair, because accuracy will gain you places. It's no good being rocket launcher fast, if your dog goes the wrong way or misses the touch points.
Oak is an absolute joy to run a course with, and he and I are having so much fun. I am unbearably proud of his acheivements - as you may have guessed!
