The vets I use publish a newsletter every month or so and a lady from the vets is wanting to publish some tips on giving dogs worming tablets in the newsletter.

So please can she have your ideas .... she has a lovely black lab that will eat anything and everything (just like Rouble Very Happy Very Happy ) but when it comes to worming tablets thats another thing!!!

Will let you know which tips get published.

TIA Sam Smile

Make the dog sit - either facing you or if you have a wriggler sit it between your legs so you can grip the body with your legs (good workout!!)

Put your thumb into the mouth just behind the lower canine teeth while holding the lower jaw in that hand, then slide the thumb between the upper and lower teeth. Dogs open their mouths by dropping the lower jaw and this opens the mouth enough to put the finger and thumb of the other hand to the back of the throat and tip the tablet over the back of the tongue (I tend to put it to one side so no worries about the trachea). Hold the mouth closed for a few seconds until the dog has swallowed, if necessary stroke the throat which produces saliva so they swallow.

Sounds horrendous but after assorted wrestling matches, spat out tablets etc when I learned this years ago I have used it ever since. In fact this morning the bigs have had a tablet each this way and it works - even with a wriggling short nosed boxer!

(did try flavoured wormers last time - the only one who ate it was Cassie Cav, so back to the old style this time).

Sorry I can't help, max will just eat his!! Laughing Typical lab. He has the chewy milbemax ones. I did have huge issues with trying to give him panacur one time though. I had to kneel on the floor with him between my legs and slowly give him a little at a time and then hold his mouth closed so he couldn't spit it out. He didn't like having that one bit must taste horrid.

I find a dairylea triangle often works. Give the dog a little bit first then the rest with the tablet stuffed in the middle.

My parents' last dog would only have his tablets in a Milky Way Star. Shocked

Get a hot dog or sausage and cur a thin slice then slice the middle and push tablet in (if its big quarter the tablet and use more sausage). This is the only way i can get daisy to take hers. Make it small enough peices that they just swallow instead of giving it a good chew

I'm a bit of a cheat. I just mix them in with their breakfast. I usually do it when their having fish to hide the smell. Works every time.

Pasco and Zephyr are stars at pills. Infact Zephyr will take them like treats! However! Hudson is an amazing pill dodger!!!!!

Similar to the methods with the sticky stuff like peanut butter or dairylea triangles I crush it between two spoons and mix it with something sticky. That way capt pill dodger can't suck all the sticky stuff off and polietely spit it out onto the floor!!! Another method is to crush it up and add water to his food, then stir it up into the food. He hates this with a passion and dirty looks will ensue but eventually he has to conceed that if he wants to eat he needs to accept the "pollution" Wink

Well I just treat it as a treat and they don't pause to think otherwise.

I ask them to come and give a real treat, ask for a sit, make them wait a little to raise excitement and then hand over my 'treat', they hoover too fast that they don't think twice Laughing

I've also had the vet make a big fuss of what's in his closed hand, almost teasing them with whether they can have it and that works too Laughing
