Hi everyone, as the title suggests, we are awaiting a home-check to see if we are suitable to re-home a Lab!! We already have Oscar who's just about 3 and Poppy who's just over 1, they are both black labs and now we have a big garden and plenty of space around us, we wanted to re-home a dog rather than buy a pup! Do you have any Top Tips for the check and integrating the dog with our 2, assuming of course that we are successful?
How exciting, I remember how nervous I was before our home check but it was fine. They really just want to check that you are ready for the hurly burly of labrador life and have a secure environement for them. As you already have two labs you should sail through. As for intigration I think it depends on the dog. When Molly arrived with us she and Oscar just hit it of straight away and we never looked back. Gus was bewildered and cranky and intolerant of the youngsters and it took a bit longer. We had to introduce them separately and for short periods. They always got on so much bettter on walks than in the house so we used to make sure he got space when he needed it indoors. They are great together now and I thin three is a great number. Can't wait to hear how you get on.
I imagine that having two Labs already your garden will be secure as rescues are usually pretty hot on that, as Norma said seeing you already have two young Labs they`ll know you know what its like
Most rescues ask that you take family and dogs already living with you to meet a prospective foster to see if everyone gets on including resident dogs.
Good luck with the check, I`m sure it`ll be fine and I hope you get your rescue soon, remember we`ll want to see pics when you do
Good Luck ... I am sure you will all be fine.
I have found out mine is being done on Saturday morning!
Will keep fingers crossed for you and await your news.
HC just be yourselves nothing to worry about honestly
As regards introducing your dogs to new one. If the dog is in foster (what happens here) the whole family come to meet the foster and we go for a walk together . So the dogs meet on neutral ground and can be off lead so i can see how they get on. Also gives me and prospective owners a chance to ask questions and importantly for me to get a feeling and idea if the home will be right for the foster dog
Haven't (touch wood) had to say no at this point
As i've said just be yourselves and i'm sure all will be fine . Just a note to say if (which hopefully won't happen) the fosterer says no please don't be downhearted as they know what's the right home for the foster in their care
If the dog you're interested in is in kennels the usually same applies (some rescues vary) you go to meet the dog with all your family . They usually have an exercise area and the dogs get to meet and interact. You will normally be met by a rescue rep to help with any questions you may have . HTH
Any questions don't be afraid to ask the rescue they want to get the home right first time and would rather you asked and made them aware any worries/questions you may have before the dog goes off home with you
Thanks Marie for the advise. I am still a little nervous but also excited about the whole thing. This particular rescue doesn't provide available dog information until after vetting has been signed off - I suppost that's to avoid disspointment if you've already set your heart on a particular Lab.
So fingers crossed and all goes well we will be on the approved list and then it's about matching us up with what's available.

Alot of rescues match the dog to the homes as you may fall for a certain dog and it be totally unsuitable for your set up and family .
Everything crossed for you and look forward to hearing about your new addition
