One of the most frustrating things I have found is well meaning strangers saying what a lovely pup and stroking him as he jumps up. meanwhile i try to wrestle him down, then they promptly say, oh that's ok I don't mind he's only a pup and carry on fussing him while I am trying to calm him. Then they say hello in a fizzy excitable way guaranteed to put a rocket up his but. Don't get me wrong, I've loved how friendly people have been out and about since we've had him, but there comes a point when they need to check first if it's ok to say hello.
One man last week said "are you sure you aren't going to train the dog out of him?", while I was in mid leave it, look at me, heel mode. I explained what I was trying to do, Max bless him sat quietly, I said the man could say hello as Max wasn't "asking", but I asked him if he wouldn't mind turning his back if Max jumped. He went on to fuss Max as he was jumping.
Today Max sat nicely watching some children on a fairground ride. Next thing I know he ran behind me nearly pulling my arm out of its socket. A well meaning lady had walked behind me and called Max. When I explained what I was trying to do, she just said oh well, he just wanted to say hello like I was willow the witch and should be reported to the RSPCA!
Sorry, that has turned into a rant, but it is frustrating when what we are trying to do gets undermined.
Anyway, thankyou for your reassuring comments, and we will have a go with the video,

I share your frustration Mandie!
We had visitors yesterday. Harvey got greeted with the usual excitable high pitch nonsense whilst frantically fussing him! Got no chance of keeping him calm when people act like that around him.
Most people ignore him when he jumps like I ask but there's a couple that pet him when he jumps despite me reminding them every time, to which they reply 'oh yeh I forgot, sorry'.
It can be frustrating that all the time and effort put into training gets put back because of people not listening or caring and thinking the dog's a bloody toy. In my case the offenders are about to get a short sharp shock and if they don't abide they wont be seeing him full stop. It's a big deal imo as it could end up limiting his socialisation in the future which is more important than certain people getting their puppy fix
A couple of times I've walked him I've had neighbours wanting to say hello just as I get out the front door. Cant blame people wanting to meet him but it's annoying that I've spend time inside getting him in the right state of mind then as soon as we get out he gets greeted and goes mad. The people then sod off and leave you with a frantic puppy pulling on the lead, so you have to stand there for a few minutes calming him down.
Anyway, thats my rant done as well
That vid looks good

I couldn't agree more. Must admit I was ranting at my poor Oh yesterday saying exactly that - our puppy is not a toy for people to get their fix with. I am grateful people love labs and we don't have any PR work to do as with some other breeds, but really, I would never walk up to a pram of a complete stranger and start cooing uninvited, or pick the child up while the parent's back was turned. And I wouldn't ignore a friend who asked me to interract in a certain way to help with training her puppy.
It's just about manners, having some respect, and being a little thoughtful - too much to ask when a lab melts a heart I guess

Welcome to the world of owning a cute puppy .
Seriously though, try not to worry too much, as if you get stressy, then the pup will pick up on that and react even more. The pup has to learn to greet and move on, regardless of how excitable the greeting was. So try to just be calm and matter of fact about it. The frantic puppy greeting strangers will become less and less as he gets bigger anyway, so it's a naturally limiting phase with a large breed dog .
