We would like to adopt a labrador bitch under 3 years old.We live in West Sussex nr the seafront.we have 3 children 2.6 and 8.We would travel for the right dog
The reason we are not looking to get a puppy is the puppy stage!! We are used to handling large dogs in the past and dont mind training. We would love to have a lab to share our lives with.It will be a pet dog not for showing or breeding.
if anyone knows of anyone who wants to rehome please let me know.
Btw i have already looked at the other rescues.they dont like rehoming with youngsters in the house. Thanks everyone x

Oooh fingers crossed someone can help - I know a few people on here have done it with children so I am sure someone can point you in the right direction and hopefully get a good match for you.

I got Fern at 7 months and I have to say having a 2 year old son in the house, I am pleased I did not get a puppy - the early puppy stage in particular is very hard and with kids even more so. I had Grouse from a puppy and it is tough. I am so pleased you are looking to have a slightly older dog, there are so many out there looking for a good home and it is lovely to have someone come along keen to help on of them.

Good luck - definately keep us posted.....

Does the dog HAVE to be a Lab? Just wondering, as there are so many Lab crosses out there and also many, many other breeds and crosses who would be suitable for your family. For example, I had a large Deerhound Lurcher when my children were very young and she was so patient, kind and gentle. She was absolutely perfect with the children and very easy to live with.

You may get very lucky, come up trumps straight away and find the perfect Lab girly but if not, I'm sure if you widen your search you'll find a suitable dog quicker than if you stick specifically to Labs. Wink

Can I add too... do consider a boy too. There is a mistaken thought often that bitches are calmer and easier. Its a complete misnomer! If I've ever come across a nasty dog (it doesn't happen often) its invariable an old bitch! Smile

I have three boys and they are each and every one of them dumplings! Hudson my eldest really missed his calling, he would have made the most perfect family dog! We don't have any kids and sometimes I feel sad for him!

Hiya - I was off looking for a post that had a link to here ......

http://www.blackretrieverx.co.uk/Black_Retriever_X_Rescue/ Dogs_for_rehoming.html

There were more dogs on there a while ago so it may be worth contacting them as they say they have a waiting list and I imagine a lot go before they reach the website....

Quote from the site ...

''WILL WE REHOME TO A FAMILY WITH VERY YOUNG CHILDREN?
Many rescues won’t but we specialise in retriever types and many of them are wonderful with children. If you are experienced dog owners and we know enough about a dog’s background to be sure they will be fine with your little ones, we will consider you. ''
