I don't want to rain on anyone's parade - but furminator's wreck double coated and thick coated dogs -

Personally I wouldn't advise anyone to use one, but certainly not anyone who works or shows their dogs - it seems to pull out a lot of hair - when what it actually does is shred the coat (particularly the undercoat Sad and takes forever to come back correctly Sad

Interesting Sue - can I ask what you use instead because I have to admit that I have given up with the furminator because Sam hates it but is fine with a soft brush that I have, I've also got a zoomgroom but he thinks that's a toy and runs off with it at any opportunity Rolling Eyes

I just use a normal double sided brus - one side normal hairbrush wider bristles and the other side the thicker bristles.

However, I do know of someone on another forum who bought some 'fancy' gadget after abandoning her furminator - and I have to say the difference in the dogs coat was incredible.

I didn't realise immediately what the Furminator does - but started to get a bit suspicious when I was trying to tidy up Hope's coat around her neck and head and realised it was actually shredding the coat as opposed to simply removing the loose hair Shocked it took ages for it to come back properly - I am just grateful I didn't use it more on her - although we've still got it here somewhere - it's use is banned in our house now).

I will try and see if I can find out what the other gadget was called - as I said - the after pictures between that and the Furminator were quite remarkable/

The teeth in a furminator are very small blades a bit like the ones you would get on a pair of clippers its just that they dont move. So as they comb through the coat they actually cut the hair.

They are banned in this house too as Maple hates it, we use a zoom groom combined with a small pony body brush with the elastic strap over the handle.

Sorry Gnome didn't mean to make you feel bad there are lots of people and lots of breeds who really like the furminator - have you thought about popping it onto ebay, I've sold all sorts of things on there and its really easy to do, I'm often suprised by which things sell and which don't though!

Sue - would love to know what the gadget was your friend used!

Well I use one for Amber (who would have a fit if I ever tried to work or show her), and it's great! There's no way I'd have it anywhere near my boys who just get groomed with a boring grooming rake, but for a shed-a-lot pet dog I wouldn't be without one Very Happy

I only use my furminator on the bitches twice a year when the coats are REALLY coming out and they are tufty and are a mess. I then wouldn't show them out of coat anyway and their coats come back fine after.

I use my furminator in the same way Woodmist does and I've never had a problem with the coat coming back either, I think it depends in some cases on when and how often you use it.
