Oh dear, Sue, you are experiencing rather depressing stuff at the moment - my thoughts are with you...
Then to your original question. I can't label myself as very experienced, but hopefully I may be able to give you some views. There are two choices, really. Either she is heavily phantom-pregnant or there is just one or max two puppies. The scan won't necessarily show puppies, if the eggs have conceived very late and the puppies are still very small at the time of the scan. Meaning that your mating took place at a very early stage of the ovulation. I would go for an x-ray to make absolutely sure about the situation. X-ray should take place about a week before the whelping, not before, because the skeletons are not fully developed and won't be visible in the x-ray.
A friend of mine had a similar situation 1,5 years ago. Slip mating, two scans showing absolutely no signs of puppies. But the bitch looked soooo pregnant that the owner took her to the x-ray to make sure and there it was, one loner swimming in the mommy's tummy! She booked time immediately to C-section, because it is pretty unusual the mothers to whelp the loners without any problems (one puppy won't necessarily stimulate the womb enough to make the whelping start and also the loner may be so huge in size that it won't have room to get out). Everything went fine with the op and she got a healthy and big boy, whome she named Invisible Man !
I wish you good luck, hopefully things will eventually turn out the best way!

Thanks for the info, unfortunately - our vets here point blank refuse to x-ray pregnant bitches - so it's not an option (It's a discussion we've have before following one of your posts)
She is bouncing around here more like her normal self now - but when she sits down - her belly looks like she has, or is just about to give birth - her teats are so swollen bless her
Oh Sue, sounds like are having a very trying time of it.
Remember my post about Brooke's morning sickness with her phantom? luckily her symptoms stopped at that and by due date it was obvious she was not pregnant.
Hope she gives you some difinitive sign, and all ends happily x What a worry for you

Oh god, I had managed to forget about that. Sorry Sue, I really didn't remember the x-ray-thread in the past. Have you tried to feel her tummy? My vet adviced me once via telephone, how to feel the possible puppies by firmly stroking the tummy by hand. You put the bitch lying on the side and start carefully, but firmly pressing the belly and moving your hand right under the ribcage. You should be able to feel a clear lump there, if there is a puppy. Skillful people can also feel the intestines.
Last year we were in the middle of labour and we were unsure, whether there was still one puppy hiding or not (x-ray had showed 8, possibly nine puppies). My friend had really good hands and she said she can definately feel an extra lump in the womb. Right she was, after half an hour the bitch started to push once more and the last boy, sadly stillborn, came out.
I think we can safely say she isn't pregnant - and is having no issues wth her phantom - hoolying around with Dream like a pair of lunatics - so everything seems to be back to normal.
Thanks everyone for your support and help (Martin is also on the mend after his surgery as well ) - although he won't be running around the ring anytime soon - so look out those that have offered to help you may just find me taking you up on it
<Makes mental note to self - DO NOT get admitted to hospital as an emergency when you want to mate one of your girls - and use the pre-mate as a back-up with a maiden bitch >
