Hi everyone, Lucy's puppies were 8 weeks last Friday. Milo went to his new home on Friday evening. Have just received an email from the guy saying they dread coming home to the pup and it is making them all very anxious and his daughters do not want him. He is heartbroken but they want to return him asap. I always say to people they can return a pup for whatever reason, but really wasn't expecting this. They live in a huge house in the country with loads of space for Milo to run about. I really am in shock.
Also a guy was to pick up Harry today and has pulled out as he thinks the sires head is too big. Just an excuse really. Heard also that he bought a cheap pup and returned it threatening to kill the guy as the pups head was like a springer spaniel and that it had a strange cry. So Harry had a lucky escape here!
I am distraught about all this. Never had these problems before.
They had Milo booked from he was born and were so excited. They had crate, kennel, loads of toys and send my pictures on Sunday and they seemed to be doing great! I know they wouldn't be bad to him, but his daughters obviously aren't pulling their weight in looking after him. I think its his wife really that has the problem. When they picked him up they put him in a pet carrier and Milo cried and cried. I explained it was because he had never been closed in before. Have to say she did have anxiety written all over her face.
I will have to email them back here.
I know the guy will be gutted bringing him back and will be very difficult for him.
It is just one of those things that happens. Get the pup back as soon as possible and find it a new and far better home. As for the person that has cancelled before even taking the pup see it as a lucky escape.
As a breeder I try to learn from each time anything similar happens. Handling the public is by far the hardest part of breeding pups.
I feel very lucky that I haven't had to have a pup back since my first litter. Although that may be more by luck than judgement. What looks like one of the very best homes that there can be on paper (metaphorically speaking) can actually be one of the worst homes in real life. Take it on the chin and deal with it for the pups sake, then sit down and analyse it after all the pups have gone, and maybe try to put some new home selection procedures in place for next time. If there is a next time
Fudge (what I called him) is coming home tonight. The guy is really upset about it. Seems its his daughters and his wife have made the decision and he has to go along with it. I think its more a case of a puppy upsetting their routine and their pristine large house. They had the pup booked from it was born. Had been to my house 4 times to see them. All seemed well. I had got to know them, knew where they lived etc. Everything seemed perfect, nothing I could have done differently. Got photos emailed at the weekend and he was settling in. Seems when they started back to work it was just to difficult to manage. Though I did explain everything long before they took him. Said he needed 4 feeds a day etc etc. Explained about the toileting, training, everything. They agreed that they would take it in turn to make sure and be home at lunch time for Milo.
This is my third litter and still in contact with all the puppies owners from the past. Never ever had to deal with this. I'm more upset that Fudge is coming back to me and will then have to get used to another family all over again. Its not fair on him. His crate has been dry the last 4 nights and he has a lovely gently nature. They're bringing his crate, all his toys etc etc. I just feel sorry for my wee pup. It seems they just cannot be bothered.
As for the other guy, he was a complete nutcase. He sounded fine, but just goes to show you can't trust anyone. He had rang round lots of breeders in Ireland, even the owner of the pups father. It was her that told me about him returning the pup he bought from free ads because of its strange head and cry!
Yes I am relieved he is bringing him back to me rather than sell him on. I do give a contract with the pups saying I will always take a pup back. At least they are decent enough to let me find him a home and it must take guts for the guy to have to come to my house tonight and give him back.
Fudge has only been there a few days so it has just been an adventure for him - I feel sorry for the man as obviously the females made all sorts of promises which he believed and has now been let down.
Fudge will find a perfect home with someone else, sadly the man is stuck with his family.
I was going to say exactly the same thing Lucy. The younger the pup and the shorter time they have been in the new home the better really. I feel sorry for pups that are returned at say 5 months or more with all sorts of problems already engrained.
Fudge will fit straight back into the place where he feels safe and give you time to sort out another home for him.
I m glad the puppy is being returned if they feel as they do, otherwise he could have a had a sorry life not really wanted by the family, when will people learn a puppy is hard work and needs time spent with it and yes it will have accidents, it is a big commitment and whilst I don t know their home circumstances a pristine house and dogs don t go well together I think both your pups have had alucky escape and hope good homes will be found for them soon.
