I've noticed that AG recommend between 305g-415g of complete dry food for puppies between 12-20 weeks and 10kg-15kg, and only 345g-382g of dry food for dogs between 30kg-35kg.

I didn't realise fully grown dogs needed that little, and according to their chart my pup will be on a similar amount of daily food when he's grown up to what he's on now at 11 weeks and 8kg, he's currently on 300g.

AG suggest that if you feed the wet food as well as dry then subtract 40g of dry for every 120g of wet, so this would increase the daily weight of feed somewhat. When Harvey's on 2 meals a day I'm planning on feeding him dry food in the morning (salmon or ocean fish soaked in a little water), and wet food with a little kibble in the evening (chicken or tripe).

I'd be very interested to hear the amounts of food AG users feed their dogs, and their dogs weights?

I feed Arden Grange, and I think that they recommend feeding rather too much.

Certainly as far as my two are concerned, I find that Charlie (lab) does well on around 180g per day, split over two meals. He weighs about 28kg and looks well. Topsy (cocker spaniel) gets around 100g and weighs just over 10kg, which is fine for her.

Thanks Helen,

that doesn't seem much at all, obviously right for Charlie though as he looks in good shape.

Do you remember how much you fed as a puppy?

I don't think I'll increase Harvey's food and keep it at 300g for now, see how we get on. He doesn't look fat but it's hardly surprising because of the rate he's growing!

Sounds like he'll be on much less adult food than I initially thought, least the food budget will be less. Laughing

We moved Fred to Arden Grange Premium at about 7 - 8 months (in a vain attempt to stop him eating his poo - he was on Chudleys before which looked the same coming out as when it went in!)

Fred is now 9 months and 22.4kg - he is a working lab and very leggy and lean.

250 - 294g is the recommendation for him, which we stuck to at first, but he started waking us at night crying to be fed! He seems to have a very high metabolism and is not a "sleeps half the day" kind of dog. We have added another 80 -100g a day in the form of a lunchtime and 9pm snack. It has stopped him waking hungry at dawn, and he hasn't put on any weight.

So the answer seems to be - it depends! Obviously some are getting by on much less, but we are just going on how Fred looks (slim) and we'll cut him back if he starts to bulk out!

Hope you find a balance that works for you!

Annabel

Murphy and Amber both have the adult lamb and rice, they both have 300g a day - Murphy weighs 27kg, Amber 24.5kg. I did start off feeding the recommended amount but Murphy was starting to gain weight so I cut it down, he has severe ED and arthritis and has started to slow down the past few months which has probably made a difference. Arden Grange is one of the highest calorie dog foods on the market so I do think the RDA is rather generous!

My GSP pup is on a mixture of Burns puppy and Arden Grange large breed puppy, he's 16 weeks old and I'm guessing weighs around 12-13kg as he was 9 kg at 10 weeks. At the moment he's having around 240g a day to allow for all the training treats plus his evening Kong. Once he's fully on AG I can't see going much higher than 300g a day unless he looks as though he needs it, maybe in a couple of months time!

I have a 14 week old up who only gets 255g per day. To be fair I do top up with treats.

I am a firm believer in going by the shape of the dog rather than charts on packets.

Charlie wasn't on AG as a puppy. He came to me on Eukanuba, moved onto Beta, and soon after that onto Burns, where he stayed for several years before the move to AG.

So, in answer to your question on how much I fed him as a puppy, I cannot compare like with like really.

As someone said though, AG is fairly calorific, and the protein levels are on the high side. Hence the reason why I feed so much less than the recommended amount. I will admit too though, that I add other bits and pieces every few days, such as veggies, raw meat, sardines, eggs etc. So I guess he only needs a fairly basic amount of the food.

Go by how your dog looks, never mind what the manufacturers say on the packets. Remember that they are in the market to sell as much of their food as possible.

Funnily enough I weighed out the girls food the other day as we just go by scoop size normally!

Happy can put on weight easily so has to be kept down, she is 27kg and on 200g per day (over 2 meals)

Brogie is a skinny minny and doesn't hold weight at all, she is 21kg and on 350g per day (over 2 meals)

They are both just on the dried food and I've had Happy on it since she was 7 wks old (she's now 4yrs) I do think their guidelines are a bit high and like others, just go via the dog and if they seem too heavy then drop the food! As an aside, mine also get ALOT of exercise compared to most, a minimum of 3-4hrs free running every day.

Thanks for the helpful posts. Smile

Knew amounts would vary somewhat because of dogs shapes, metabolism, exercise etc. Generally though, the norm is low end of guideline or a bit less then. Harvey went for his 2nd jab yesterday and the vet basically said the same as you Helen, pointing out that they'll be generous as they want you to get through more of it. Not good really but doesn't surprise me Rolling Eyes

Least I know I'm not being tight feeding him at the low end of the guideline. Not that he's showing any signs of malnutrition, he's put on 1kg every week since I've had him Shocked.... and leaves me at least 4-5 minefields to dispose of on a daily basis Laughing

He doesn't look particularly fat or thin to me but I've dropped his feed slightly to 280g and see how we go. Smile

Been thinking the same thing here! Bez is 13 weeks and 11.4kg on puppy AG (300g split over 3 meals) - he looks a good shape but I don't think I'll up the amounts any time soon in line with the bag recommendations, particularly as exercise is limited at this age.

He certainly doesn't look hungry Very Happy - greedy maybe, but defintely not starving Laughing
