Shell Island is great There is also another campsite not far from there called "Nantcoll Falls" - that has some superb walking right from the site, with a pub at the end of one of forest walks on a nice day you can sit in the beer garden with the dogs. Also a favourite of mine is "Ty Isaf" near lake Bala - that is more like Wild camping, especially if you camp by the river. There is a porta loo type thing, but other than that its washing in the river. The main site is only across the road where they have showers etc, but it's a lovely place, where you can have camp fires, you can also order meat for the barbeque from the site office.
Another good one is "3 lochs" in Dumfries and Galloway. Fabulous walks straight across from the site. It also has a swimming pool and a cafe, and the scenery is stunning.
We bought the stakes and cables but we no longer use the stakes. We discovered a metal clip either side of the inside of the car boot so we attach one dog to each with the tie out cables and leave the car boot open. That way they can have a mooch around but jump into the boot when they want to chill. They are much happier with this set up rather than tied to a stake.
Only time we take ours camping is every year to the CLa Game Fair the dogs travel down in a Lintran Box then we use it as a portable Kennel inside the tent which is a long tunnel type , the above advice from people who do more camping than us sounds good advice ,
I know this might sound silly but have you thought about putting the tent up in your garden and getting your dog used to it. We did this as bernie can be quite a scardy cat at times. He didn't like the flapping of the tent in the wind at first but soon got used to it. It was definitely worth it as when we went away there were no nasty surprises for the dog. (and it was good practise putting the tent up!!!)
Warren Farm, Brean Somerset, has excellent dog walk, and beach is just over the road, dog friendly, pub next door, and another pub with really good food about 20 minute walk along the beach, so dogs can be off lead all the way and ready for a snooze when you get there.
Only down side is loads of static caravans but did'nt bother us, and tide go's out very long way, but ideal when its in.
We don't crate him at home - so do you think it's best to put him in the same pod as us on his bed or leave him in the main tent?
How secure is the main tent? Does it have a sewn in groundsheet and are the doors zipped all the way round? If not then have him in the pod with you else he can escape from the tent! Theo nearly managed to sneak out under the door once when he was loose in the tent and mum was doing something else so not watching him!
The Tie out stakes I've seen have all been quite strong, we have a corkscrew one that you screw into the ground and then clip the dog too and Theo has never managed to get that out and he's quite strong! He's quite happy to be tied on it and if tired just lies on a bed we put beside it and sleeps!
Luna comes in the main bedroom pod as it is all sewn in so she can't get out. The foyer/main bit of my tent is sewn in but the doors have gaps along the bottom which an eager nose can open and squeeze through no problem! I bought builder's yard netting to make a little garden for Luna to roam in - she can get out over/under it if she chose so I don't leave her unaccompanied in it but it's useful as she's pretty respectful of the boundary when there isn't another playful pooch just the otherside! She's happy to snooze in the car boot behind her lockable tailgate during the day/evening!
Our two love camping! Rudy loves his crate and Sarah likes to go in it to cool off. We bring an ex-pen,crates and plastic mat and set it all up against the trailer to give them a dry-off area away from dirt. I always bring extra clips to tie the pen on to the crates. Of course, we don't leave them unattended. Enjoy your holidays!
We have always taken ours in the caravan and they love it. My OH likes his home comforts too much to use a tent. I can honestly say that the holidays in the van with the dogs are the best ones ever. We walk their legs off and never have any bother with them.
You have been given some very good advice about ensuring he doesn't escape under the tent. On Millie's first trip she found she could stick her head out of the awning alongside the van.
We are fortunate to have a dedicated set of dog bowls, toys, beds etc that stay in the van. Don't forget your lead, we did that once and ended up buying more for the holiday.
I am sure you will likewise love it
