Wondering if anyone, could offer us some advice........
Archie is a 2 year choc lab and we are planning a couple of camping trips in the next couple of months with him and wondered if anyone had any tips/advice to offer us before we go!!
Definitely tie out stakes plus lots of exercise, walks, play etc so they are tired. You then have to decide whether you take a crate or not - it really depend on your holiday but the main thing is research, find out where you can go that is dog friendly eg beaches, pubs etc and it will make your life easier
we take Sam away in the motorhome and he loves it. like the others we have a tie out stake but also a lead with two trigger hooks so his shorter lead can be clipped to the 'van if we need to ensure he'll stay close - he was only 6 months when we started taking him on hols. towels and blankets like laura said. we use a 'really useful box' to keep the food and treats in because the tops clip down and they're water and other animal proof! we usually take a pack of dog wipes too handy for all sorts. we have a crate under the table with vet bed in it but then Sam loves his crate home and away so if yours doesn't normally have one you may not need to bother with that, seems to make Sam feel safe he goes in of his own accord and keeps his toys etc in it so works for us. also make sure flea treatment is up to date esp if its an area known for ticks. we take a small doggy first aid kit and look up where the local vets is, hopefully never needed but always a good idea to know just in case. other than that wellies (for you not archie...!)
We go camping with all three of ours and they absolutely love it. We tend to choose sites that are quite limited in their facilities i.e no clubhouse, no childrens playground etc etc., Instead we go for the ones that have lots of dog walks from/on the site, and as long as there's a toilet block with showers, we find that is all we need. A cage is also a must for sleeping in at night and whilst cooking etc.,
Glow in the dark collar !! Took mine camping and left him behind at the toilet block as it was dark, id had a few sherbets and walked past him cos hes chocolate and couldnt see him !! got back to tent , felt as tho something missing , hot footed it back to get him, doh !
Thanks all for your responses and all good advice. Already have towels, blankets and a tie out stake out - although not sure how long it will last as Archie is very strong - keep your fingers crossed for us.
Actually can't wait to take him, really looking for to taking him on the beach and giving him a really good long run.
We go to Shell Island (North Wales) next weekend for a couple of days, and then to Bude (Cornwall) in August - camp site is dog friendly to a degree, but has a small pub/bar and childrens playground, and we already thought a good long walk will tired him out a bit - because he is full it! Kazz59 - Defintely going to consider a more dog friendly camp site in future with more walks close by if anyone has any recommendations would welcome them!?
Zolabud1 - LOL, will add this to the shopping list!
We don't crate him at home - so do you think it's best to put him in the same pod as us on his bed or leave him in the main tent?
Thanks Emma, Lee, Archie
Sorry no picture, not sure how to attach a photo yet x
