Hello all,

Just wondering, as I remember reading this in a schedule years ago... but can't find it in a current one...

Is it true that if you enter an unlicensed fun/companion dog show, that you are technically then disqualified from competing in any KC 'real' events???

And is there any way of finding out if an event is licensed?

It seems a shame, sometimes it's nice to go and have a fun day out, supporting a charity, having a larf etc etc, but to have to worry about subsequently disqualifying myself from KC shows seems a bit excessive Rolling Eyes

Anyone know??

Thanks

Smile

Unless something huge and fundamental has changed at the KC in the last couple of years, no absolutely not in no way at all... just some companion shows do have a 'no CC winners' rule or some such ruling they will set.

So no its the other way around. Sometimes wins at KC open & Champ shows put you OUT of companion shows but never the other way around.

Well, lord knows then. OK, speaking to an ex show manager standing behind me too.... we both think that its absolutely not right. Basically a licenced companion dog show can hold pedigree classes, and unlicened one can't true enough, BUT it doesn't mean pedigree dogs can't compete in the FUN classes they then WILL put on (like waggiest tail and best six legs etc etc....)

Its insane to think anyone could police all the fun shows I'm certain! I mean, if the show hasn't applied for a licence, the KC don't know about it so how could they police that no pedigree dogs should be there?

No, listen, i wouldn't worry about it for a second, support your local charity. Think about it, when would you ever have to declare you had been there when entering a KC event? Results aren't sent to the KC and they don't have 'funshow inspectors', so something has to be not right. I am sure the Champ dogs people are muddling up themselves with the fact that pedigree classes can't be held at a unlicenced fun show.... NOT pedigree DOGS....

It seems an odd one doesn't it! I've just been at Yorkshire Game Fair, and they had all manner of pedigree and cross classes, no idea whether it was licensed or not... it just got me wondering Laughing I like to know what 'the rules' are, so I can then decide whether or not I'm going to ignore them Wink

I know I'd never have to declare it, and I dare say no one sees me or my dogs as much competition, I just was wondering hypothetically if other competitors may snitch on a big winner who may have entered the odd unlicensed show!!

Go and enjoy your fun shows Clare... you will not be penalised Very Happy

Excerpt, taken from Rules:

F3.47/14
Notwithstanding the provisions of these regulations, certain events which are not licensed by the Kennel Club may from time to time be recognised by the general committee of the Kennel Club.
The General Committe shall have the power to grant permission for Kennel Club registered dogs to be entered for such events. A judge, exhibitor or promoter will NOT be prejudiced by participation in these special unlicensed events

Very Happy

Edited to add a further thought just came to me

I wonder if people confuse fun shows with unlicensed shows.. Years ago, (never see them now) there were a few rogue societies which held, to all intents and purposes, proper dog shows... The schedules were printed similar to any other, but printed quite clearly on the front were words similar to--- This show is unlicensed, or This show is not KC licensed. Fun shows did not come under the catergory. There is a rule or at least there used to be, that anyone attending, judging or participating in these unlicensed shows, would be penalised...

I have never seen a schedule for an unlicensed show for aobut 5 years . The last one I did see was when Hunter was still minor puppy...

Thank goodness lol... Ollie won" Dog Judge would like to take home" and following month got his Stud book no at Darlington...

go have fun

I have run Fun dog shows now for 6 years, we have never come across any rules to say that if competitors enter fun classes they will be penalised by the KC and we have never had 'fun dog show police' although I now have ab image of 'covert operatives skulking around the showring Laughing

We no longer run classes such as best Pedigree bitch or Dog, this DID get us into trouble one year as a few people assumed that they would get a 'ticket' if their dog won and one lady demanded her £1 back believe it or not, so we now no longer do separate classes for Cross breed and Pedigree.

Thanks... I think perhaps some of the confusion comes from what is a fun show and what is a semi-serious non-KC show.

So at Yorkshire Game Fair, entries were taken in ring, with no record of competitors except those who came first (pet name only). I think there was an A5 printed list of classes (not sure if that counts as a schedule). There were Terrier, Lurcher, Whippet, Plummer Terrier and Gundog rings.... as well as your standard 'fun dog show' rings. In the gundog ring, there were gundog puppy classes, retriever, HPR and spaniel classes, as well as a few specific breed classes eg Labrador Dog and Labrador bitch, all with a terrific entry. There were trophies for best puppy and best of 'group' or whatever you want to call it. Winners were then invited to go back the following day to compete for 'Yorkshire SupaDog'. I'm not certain that monies raised went to charity either. I guess I'm not sure whether something as large-scale as this could be passed off under the 'fun dog show' umbrella!

Perhaps this dates back a while.
I know that the EMDAC had to put up a great big fight to ensure that people and dogs entering non-KC agility comps weren't disqualified from entering future KC agility shows. http://www.baa.uk.net/about_baa.html Scroll down to read story.
