that there is some suggestion that dogs which are mated earlier (so those who go to the stud just before ovulation, or right at it) are more likely to conceive more boys, and those who hang on a bit longer are more likely to have more girls.

Just butting in here with zero dog mating knowledge but a bit of biology Wink

The above is an unproven myth based on a human conception method termed the 'shettles method' (which is sort of the reverse of what you've mentioned). It crudely is based on an assumption that fast sperm must be the Y's and slower steadier sperm with stamins must be the x's. The theory is then that a mating pre Ovulation would need the slower (tortoise if you like!) to win the race and the mating at ovulation (or just after in dogs as fertilisation is a few days after ovulation with dogs i think) would need the Y (or hares!) to win the race.
There is no science behind it though and in reality fast sperm can just as likely be x's as y's.

Re sperm composition, X's and Y's will vary per ejaculate. It really is luck of the draw, there's pretty much nothing a man/sire owner could do that would determine he shoots boys (or girls).

This post will inevitably be followed by someone telling me i'm wrong and that their OH did various things to guarantee a son/daughter, but really with a 50/50 chance pretty much it's just chance.

Yes Sarah, I remember being told that male sperm swim faster but don't live as long, whereas the female sperm are slower but live longer. If that's correct then if you mate early you should be more likely to get more bitches, if you mate after ovulation then possibly more dogs.

I mated Poppy on day 12 with her first litter and she had 9 bitches, 1 dog. The progesterone levels were higher on day 12 this time which indicated she'd already ovulated. It'll be interesting to see if a day 12 mating produces a better balance of dogs and bitches this time. Only time will tell Rolling Eyes

I know I am a bit behind on this thread (and not read every post) - but I had the same problem with my second litter from my bitch - the first litter was the may day bank holiday - fortunately her test on the Saturday said "Mate NOW! - the second litter was over the August BH (I really don't know how they manage it!!!!).

The test on the Saturday said re-test in 48 hours (which was BH Monday) - so after watching her and thinking I knew her pretty well - we went on the BH Monday and back on the Wednesday and had a litter of 9 (we lost one little boy : )

Hally was spot on days 8 to 10 with both litters - but that is early for a lot of bitches -her daughter was day 13-15 - and can't remember what Bronte was as we didn't pre-mate test - but tested the boys instincts (but didn't get a proper tie thanks to me being taken seirously ill) - and it seems we now have a full blown phantom on day 63 Rolling Eyes

Hope all went well Very Happy
