Hi All! It's been a while since I've been on here, but I know whenever I have a lab related Q there are lot's of very experienced people I can turn to for help, by just hitting a few keys on the old laptop!
Anyway, I'm planning to have my 2nd and last litter from Asha. She came into season on 20th May, so is currently on day 9. Last time I bred her, I used the premate test from day 9 and took her to the stud on day 12, one mating, and 12 puppies after 59 days. This time is more tricky due to the darn bank holiday weekend. Vets can't test her until Tues and they don't do it in house anymore so wouldn't have the result until Weds (day 13) which I'm worried would be too late? So I'm going with the old fashioned method. Asha is still spotting. Pinkish red. Vulva is slightly swollen. I have an entire dog in the house, and he is not interested at the moment and she isn't 'standing'. Both are kept seperate when I'm not around. I'm thinking of taking her to the stud on day 11 and day 13? So hitting either side of the day 12 I had before. Obviously looking for signs all the time (driving myself slightly mad keep dabbing her bits with tissue and sniffing it, the OH thinks I'm mental!) Worried I might miss? Advice from any of the more regular breeders very welcome. Thanks, Jo
Its a difficult one because all bitches are so different. Probably for me I'd want my bitch to be standing and turning her tail for a couple of days before I take her to mate. If your bitch is day 9 now and you plan to mate on day 11 I would want her to be starting to stand today which you say she isn't. You could well be to early with a day 11 mating, that is if you get one.
The bitch that I have here at the moment who is in pup was standing and turning her tail to the side day 9 and was mated day 11 successfully.
Only you can decide really as you know your bitch. It may be that day 12 would be the better day again.
Day 9 today? Mated day 12 and 12 puppies last time? Resident Entire male not showing much interest in her? I'd premate her on Tuesday when the vets open. If it says 'ovulation occuring' then just go the next day. Eggs are around for 2 - 3 days so chances are there are none around right now from all the info you give. Is the sire a long way away? If he is then i'd premate Tues. If he is not I'd probably wait till your entire boy starts singing, and the pinkish red spotting turns almost non existant and go. That may be 12, may be 13... but sounds like its planet normal for the same as last time from things 'starting' to stir a bit today. Use your vet Tues. You won't have missed her by the very clear sounds of things.

Thanks Jill & Di. I'm watching her like a hawk for every little inkling that she may be ready. I guess I will just keep doing that, haven't really got any other options until Tuesday with regards to vets. If Oakley starts getting 'frisky' then I'll take that as a sure sign. But at the moment, all it's amounting to is a quick sniff and then he wanders off to eat his chew As for Asha, well she's more interested in the cat! The stud dog is Hector, one of Graham Robert's so only just over an hour away.
Asha is starting to turn her tail and Oakley seems a fraction more interested. But her vulva isn't as swollen as it was at the start? She is still spotting although not as heavy and certainly not as dark red. More pinky now. Thoughts please? Should I be worried that her vulva isnt as swollen? The bit between her bum and vulva is very enlarged.
Don't worry at all... and all sounds perfectly normal for probably action tomorrow or the next day. But I would premate today anyway, find out there you stand since you mated her 'today' the last time round. Then all will be revealed and you can spring into action (or otherwise...)
Thanks Di. Blimey this is stressful. I don't remember getting so worked up the last time, but perhaps that's because I started the premate testing earlier? Anyway, she's still standing and winking, flagging to Oakley who keeps trying to lick etc. All good signs, and the discharge is now very pale and very light. Premate booked for 10.30am today and results this avo, so hopefully all systems go. I'll let you know
