Sorry to hear she has anxiety problems. I just wondered what it means wehn you say she will stay wtih CARE, Does that mean she will be in long term foster care or does it mean kennels? Sorry if that's a silly question.

Hi Norma

sorry about the delay - been away for a few days to the Gower.

When a dog stays with a rescue permanently normally it will mean they go into a foster home for the rest of their life (only really keep them in kennels if they are institutionalised and would not settle in a home, it does mean we have a kennel space tied up for a dog forever and even at the best rates we can get that is a lot of money over a number of years!).

There are 3 sorts - basic foster adoption (ie the dog has a health issue, the rescue pays for any treatment relating to that but the new owner pays for everything else as they would with any "normal" dog - we have Freddie Rottie on this arrangement with his owner, he needed both knees replacing but as he is only a couple of years old we wanted to give him a chance.).

There is vet fee adoption (normally a old dog where the owner would have difficulty getting insurance, so we say we will cover all vet fees other than boosters/worming etc - Poppy ancient terrier x is under this one).

Then there is of course the type that Reggie is with me under - we cannot rehome him due to him biting when he was so petrified of the world (think he is way past that now) -- even if we found the right home where the people let him take his time all it would take would be one idiot insisting on fussing him (like the woman tried to in the vets) and if he snapped that would mean two strikes against him. He originally came to me for long term foster so he could get over his fear of everyone and everythig but she was insisting she wanted to fuss him despite me asking her to ignore him and fuss Jed instead, and was only stopped by me saying to her that if he snapped again I would take him straight back into the surgery to be killed. I discussed what had happened with the other Trustees and we agreed he would stay with me so he would have 4 canine bodyguards to push in if anyone tried that in future. In theory CARE is going to pay me back for his dental work (£232 and desperately needed doing) and his neutering - and he will then stay with me as my dog but under the banner of CARE if any medical emergencies arise. As it is we have had major vet bills recently so I have more or less written the money off. I suppose really I should just fill in the forms to officially adopt him - never would have thought I would have a JR of any sort let alone one crossed with a Gremlin but he is not bother, adores the other dogs and me - but still wary of other people - and the past few days has been brilliant with recall and trotting along at heel offlead coming up the cliffs.

Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed response. It sounds like you have a lot of creative ways of helping the dogs in your care, it must cost a fortune and be a nightmare to organise. I really admire the work that you and the other good rescues are doing, it's quite humbling.
