Just occasionally I will sit down and go through some of the LLR sites and look at dogs that perhaps need a special 'push', in the main, the majority of dogs in rescues tend to be rehomed quite quickly, but sadly, many Older dogs are overlooked, when I do homechecks the majority of people are looking for youngsters no older than 5yrs in many cases.
As an owner of two 'Oldies' Jack who is now 9yrs and Maia who is coming up to 10yrs, I can honestly say they make life richer.
Older dogs have the advantage of generally being more laid back, of taking life in their stride, they tend to sleep a lot more, so make the ideal dog for someone who perhaps is not so active themselves but wants a companion who will give unconditional love for very little in return, just a nice comfy bed and good food and lots of TLC.
I really do believe that everyone needs an 'Oldie' or 2 or 3 in their lives

My OH has tried to ban me from looking at this site, because I spend the next few days going "can we adopt".... one of the oldies....
I have recently posted about getting another dog, but feel at 9 months my girl isn't really ready for another dog yet, but I will seriously consider an oldie when I feel the time is right. My brother-in-law has adopted several oldies (springers), and they have all been really good, loyal dogs. It really is important that oldies aren't overlooked, well done for raising the profile of these lovely oldies.
Thank you Nat. There are SO many lovely dogs on our site, I really believe there's an oldie out there for everyone.
It breaks my heart to see how many older dogs are sat waiting in rescue, so please, if you are thinking of getting another dog, take a look at the older ones in rescue, or at least at rescue.
We list dogs aged 7+ at Oldies Club, so many of these dogs (even the older ones) are still active and up for a good walk, but if you would rather have a dog that just wants to potter around with you, I'm sure you could find one to suit
My boys are all older dogs now (11, 12 and 13) and they are still active, great company and up for a snuggle
Thank you Ali, I did a homecheck for Oldies yesterday and they have a 7 month old Leonburger!

I'd have upton here in a flash if it wasn't for the fact he doesn't get on with cats... poor boy has been waiting for almost half his life for a home. And he's such a handsome boy too!

We adopted Minnie as a young pup from rescue when our existing dogs were aged 7, 8 and nearly 9. She wasn't a pain in the bum puppy at all but she settled in brilliantly.
And our lovely oldie Springer Tom has recently been adopted by an LF member and is living with a young Lab
I don't think every older dog would cope with a much younger one, but there are still plenty of older dogs who are active.

He is a lovely boy. He needs to be an only dog too unfortunately, but I'm still surprised he's had to wait so long. I went for a walk with him and his carer recently so I could do a second blog for him and show off his recall (which is excellent) and how active he still is.
Oh Natalie, my OH will try and shut me down from this site, believe me!!!!
Just checked up what a Leonburger looks like and I think he would leave home if I mentioned adopting one of these beauties, mind you....there's something to consider...
Thank you for all the brilliant work you do supporting the oldies, and I really will consider an oldie, I have shed many a tear looking at those lovely dogs who so deserve a loving, forever home.
This little fellow isn't in our overlooked section yet (that depends on how long the dog has been listed on the OC site) but he is in Urgent and he would love a home.
Hugh, at Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter (WARS). Very handsome and sweet Staffie boy who is thought to be around 8 years old. He arrived at the rescue as a stray and is stressed in kennels and is losing weight and depressed
Hugh is well-behaved, good with other dogs, great with people and could live with children aged 10+. He's house-trained, has been good on vet visits, pulls a little on the lead, likes playing and will need a secure garden. Not known how he is with cats.
