A friend's dog used to duck just the first jump - she experimented with placing him closer/further from the jump and lowering the jump height etc and it was placing him further back on the start line - right back - that got him jumping it. It was almost like he'd got focussed on the 2nd jump as the first if he was any closer to the 1st jump.

I think I need to keep my hand (and the ball) higher up for the jumps so that she is looking up at where she needs to jump and also keep my hand lower down on the contact equipment so that she makes the contacts before jumping off.

Very interesting thread. My replies differ with each dog -
Fife aged 12 in two weeks time - LOVES agility with a passion!!! Even now, he still runs Allsorts classes at the lowest height (practically pole on ground) and as soon as he realises he is queueing for his turn his ears prick, his eyes brighten, his tail wags like crazy, and he grabs the lead and tugs at it! Fife is now rather deaf, and so can't hear me at a noisy show, so often despite my waving signals at him he takes the wrong course! But I just change the order of the jumps so that he does't know he's gone wrong, and he bounces around the whole way with a huge grin on his face. Watching Fife run a course is highly emotional for me because he so loves it, and I get quite choked up watching my old boy!
Oak is just like his Dad, Fife. He adores agility. Both father and son are quite calm in the queue, but then as the dog before him goes to the start it's like a switch goes on in Oak's head "AGILITY" and he is totally focused on the course ahead. He flies around, with me puffing and panting behind him!
Ash is more laid back about agility. if you look at the photos of him, he certainly seems to be enjoying himself, and flowing courses really suit him. But Ash is a worrier, and he doesn't "DO" pressure, so twisty turny courses really stress him out. As a result, I enter Ash for 3 classes at a show, and usually run two of them, picking the more flowing courses which he will enjoy the best. He's a whizz at helter skelters!
I very nearly gave up training with Ash, when he seemed to enjoy the first run or two, and then lose all interest. He didn't seem to be showing any sign of health issues, but none the less I had him checked by vet, and Galen therapist. I was that close to giving up with him, really believing he wasn't enjoying it, when my chiropractor found that he had a tiny bone out in his back. The twisty turny courses had probably hurt him, not helping his confidence. Months of gentle training with a super trainer brought Ash back, and at his last show he did 3 cracking runs inclusing a clear round! The is no question that he enjoy it, as long as I don't put pressure on him. Ash loves the social side of agility too - all those dogs to sniff, all those treats to hoover up!!!
When I train any of the dogs it's never for more than an hour, and if there are not many people in the class then I will stop before the dogs look like they have had enough. Always leave them wanting more! If it's hot, then they have far less energy,so again, classes are a lot shorter for the Labs.
But in answer to the question - we do agility for all of us! We love it!
