I was a little worried about Rufus's weight as his ribs felt a bit thickly covered so I got him weighed last week and it said he was 36.35 kgs. Thought it was a little much and have put him on a diet. Less food more exercise. He's been a bit of a pickle constantly snuffling for food (more so than normal ) but I put that down to him being hungry. Well we went back to the vets today feeling confident as he felt better to touch (not perfect but better) but it says he was 37.6kgs . Do you think they may have been wrong either last week or this week? It was really busy so I ddint speak to any of the staff.
I took him home and weighed him on my scales and it says he was 36.2kgs (it took several attempts as I was laughing so much at trying to hold him and stand on the worlds smallest set of scales) I know mine are pretty accurate (the doctors and mine tell me I weigh the same) but not sure if holding a dog and standing on them would be as good as the vets scales?
I think he's looking quite good at the moment, a little chunky but not terrible (and not like he has put on 1.25kg in a week). He's quite tall at 24" (I think I measured right floor to withers?)
Sorry for another weight post but if he is gaining weight like that he's going to be a bus soon! He's fed skinners duck and rice and I was giving him 300g a day (spilt into 2 meals) plus treats for training (not loads) but dropped it to 220g a day and hardly any treats. If I did the reccomended amount it would be 400g a day. We also have two walks a day. About 4 miles on lead and about 45mins-1 hour off lead in tota,l plus agility once a week and please behave yourself training twice a week
What do you think??
Stand stays aren't our strongest point but hopefully the photos give you an idea of how he's looking to eye.
Thanks
xxxxx

I think in those pics and when I last saw him in the flesh he looks great.
I wouldn't want to see more cover on him, but he doesn't need to be slimmer either - just right.
Go more by eye than actual weight - he is still a youngster and as such his weight will and should be still increasing slightly. He's probably done growing height wise but as he matures he'll grow out - not fatten but broaden in bone
It could also be that he's muscling up and that's affecting the scales too
Now we're doing agility I wanted to make sure he stays on the slimmer side but healthy. I do worry about his weight and thought weighing him would be the easiest way to monitor it but I think going by eye will be better as I think he looks better than he did last week. I was so surprised at the scales and weight gain, hopefully its all just muscle
Hope you're all well and had a lovely holiday. We'll have to have another meet up soon
He looks great, if he was mine I would like a little more waist (the on top pic looks like maybe he hasn't got enough) but the side on looks pretty much right. He ceratinly doesn''t look like a dog that has put on a load of weight, if he looks over it would be only very very slightly
My initial thought was the same as everyone elses - but on a closer look - yes - at the risk of making myself unpopular - I would say he needs to lose just a pounds.
Two reasons - firstly, looking from above - he has no obvious waist - and also if you look at his front - where many dogs have good angulation - the effect almost seems to created by extra weight - sorry
As I said - not a massive amount - but if he was mine, I would be looking to knock a kilo or two off him.
actually not sure your from above pic is completely from above but more above/side which might not sure him going in as much as he does at the waist. The picture above looks pretty ideal to me??
Don't worry Sue I agree as he's lost some waist and is on a diet, we both are . I wanted to get him from 36.35kg (if that was his starting weight) to about 35kgish so about 1.5kg loss. He does look better than last week which is why I was surprised the scales said he'd put on 1.25kg. I really don't know how unless the scales were wrong either week. I've cut his food down and upped his exercise, I expected to see a small weight loss as I know it'll take a while. I'm not sure what to do now.
He's nearly 14months as not sure about using a lighter food for him.
I am seriously fussy with my dogs weight and I like them very slim but they are more that shape if that makes sense. He is more of a show shape and I have to say he looks in brilliant condition to me, he has a waist, he looks a wonderful shape from above, I would not worry about the scales but about his overall appearence, he is tall and he has a broad head etc too, I think he would look out of proportion slimmer. I think he looks fab.
