I'm speechless and that doesn't happen to me very often! I really hope other people in your class walk out too. To handle a dog like that is absolutely unacceptable. To do it when you're a trainer; supposedly teaching people how to manage their dogs.... thats obscene. If I was you I'd be letting local vets know that you experienced this at this class; maybe they'll think twice about recommending the training school. So often people get to hear of training classes at their local vets.

" Hi Jane, it was a man and yes he picked him up, nealry 25kg of him by his collar. "
Just for some balance I think you will find it was by the loose skin either side of his neck AND his collar not just his collar.
I'm not saying what was right or wrong because I wasn't there to judge, however I'm sure that it wasn't by just the collar as its too thin to be holding alone, and the area he had him is a very unsensitive area.
However its right to judge which methods you like and don't like for yourself and good luck with finding a new class.

To clarify as I was only 3ft away!
He grabbed him by his collar alone!!
You could see the space between the collar and his fur!!
It was totally out of order , my dog was not out of control or attacking another
dog or god help me a child or human.
He just went to his dad too early:
he was wrong to do that and I have since had an apology, not good enough
and too late.
No one treats my dog like that. End of. So we start a new class monday and
I can't wait.
I am sure other people use stricter methods and thats your own choices however its
not my choice and therefore I don't epect anyone else to do it.
Ok, just clarifying as if it were 25kgs off the ground by ONLY a collar he would of been choking and retching as it would of shut off his windpipe. You did put question marks in your subject line so therefore I thought you were seeking opinions.
It certainly sounds like your trainer had run out of ideas, which is when some get rougher. Running out of ideas on something as simple as breaking a stay leads me to believe you probably did the right thing in leaving. They sound a very limited trainer.
I hope you enjoy your class Monday, best of luck with it.

I trained Barney by clicker Debpat and it worked really well. It's not too late - Barney didn't fit in in one class, he hated it so much I left it for a while and then when he was about 18 months started another. He learnt quite a bit there (but still didn't like it!).
Obviously you have done the right thing for Buddie, and I would spread the word about the first trainer amongst other dog walkers, particularly if they have a pupster, so that others don't experience what you and Buddie did.
well it has had an impact on you which is enough of a reason to leave. Like Di says - you have the right to judge what methods you like and question the ones you dont.
Lifting him by his collar (with or without scruff) so all four paws are off the floor is harsh and wrong imo, however, as celine says holding them by the collar to take them back to the begining of where the training session fell apart and putting them into a sit is exactley what I would do. it is firm but fair and a clear message.
What I would say is....what kind of trainer expects a dog to do a stay the length of the hall without seeing if it can do a shorter length stay first???
baby steps lead to bigger steps! I would retrace my steps and think I have taken the distance too far for the desired outcome. once I know a dog can do a stay I take it as long as I want it to. If this means re-starting the stay until it is completed correctly then so be it. BUT that is when I know the capabilities of my dogs and that wouldnt be an expectation on such a young dog (though I may *hope* to achieve that in a young dog I am practical enough to realise they need to learn it first!!!!!).
I do firmly believe in making a dog sit, planting its bottom as it were - as it helps make the dog stop and think for a second whilst you are trying to get the desired result.....ie if it is leaping about nothing will resolve as the dog isnt thinking/concentrating at all.
Training sessions are always best after exercise so some of the bouncey energy is expelled and keep your training sessions short!
Go to a new class - this guy is out of order to lift a dog off the floor like that, but you will still need to know how to be firm in a fair way with your dog.
It is hard to find a good trainer - ask everyone you see on a walk to see where they went with their dogs?
Good luck

I would be running a mile from that class I went through 2 dog clubs and 1 private trainer before I found my current club and I love it there.
Cadbury was my first dog and being inexperienced I did keep my mouth shut about things that seemed wrong in those earlier training clubs, thankfully labs are extremely forgiving! With Merlin I know what I like and what I don't and I tell people. I've got my confidence now as the young trainer at Pets at Home discovered when he got soundly told "I don't do that with my dog" or "I do it this way." He must have hated me!
BTW, I have been known, and so has my trainer, to grab Cadbury's collar and drag him if for instance he has run off to another dog or is messing around, but never to lift him off the ground.
Just to make a comparison - my OLD gundog trainer waved a live bullet at my dog and said "this is all you're good for" then asked me if I'd consider selling him and getting a different dog that was from "proper working lines" as my only option other than that was to use an electric collar.
Sounds like he lost his temper loosing control is exactly what training is NOT about?
My trainer I used when Bea & Lux were young is very you could say harsh/blunt with the owners, but lovely with the dogs I couldn't stand for anyone to act like that with my dogs.
Hope you find a more suitable class
