After seeing the NI champ show results and seeing
BCC & RBIS: AM CAN CH CLEAR CREEK BONAVENTURE WINDJAMMER
I am assuming there is a connection with Dudley's Dad somewhere who is
Keepsake's Earl of Bonaventure
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/stud-dog/10692.html
who was imported from USA a few years ago.

Maybe I'm completely wrong (no surprise there then Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes ) but it's the first time I've seen any 'BonaVenture' dogs mentioned on here and got a bit excited lol

Thanks John.
I can definitely see where Dudley gets his looks from - Eddie's face is just like Dudley Laughing Laughing I have to say though, even though Duds is a real chunky monkey, he looks anorexic compared to some of those Shocked Shocked

edited to add - just checked Duds pedigree and Eddie is Dudley's Grandad

America is tending to carry "Substance" to what I personally believe is an excess. There was a series of posts on a US forum with comments that it was impossible to meet the breed standard with a dog of less that 125lbs. When you read the AKC breed standard this is little different to the UK standard, so it is not the standard at fault as much as the interpretation of that standard. I'm not criticising individual dogs, more a culture of judging which has allowed this to happen. It's interesting that the recent amendments to the KC breed standard have been directly opposed to these excesses.

Regards, John

125lb! I just converted this to 56.7kg Shocked Shocked Shocked
Both mine are aound 40kg and big boys. I can't imaging them being 56kg!

Is there an American equivalent of LF John? I would be interested in seeing if I can find any relatives.
When I posted Dudley's pedigree on here when I first got him, a lady in USA posted to say she also has an 'Earl' son. We've kept in touch via Facebbok

I dont think there is any LF equivalent for any breed anywhere in the world Wendy! We are unique and special! Yes there are a few pet sites, and few devoted to showing and a few dedicated working sites, but nothing where your one post will be read by people in every aspect of Labrador life as it is here. Write a post here and look back later and you are likely to be reading replies for pet people, agility, working trials to say nothing of owners of show and field trials champions! That's what makes LF so special.

Regards, John

Margaret Brown (Ramsayville) often has American dogs over to campaign for a year or so. Maybe hers are the exception, but I've fallen for just about all of them I think Laughing Am Ch Ghostone Hyspire Dressed To Impress and Can. Ch. Beechcroft's Pardon Me Sir are two that I absolutely lurrve. Melvin is a Am Ch Weathertop El Nino GGson, who was another cracker. Another American BPISS/BPIS CH MoonLit's Drum Roll is one I'm really taken with at the moment, but then I'm just getting obsessed and waffling Laughing

I don't know whether it's just that I only hear about 'the best' American/Canadian dogs, or if there's something that I prefer about them (their heads?) It'd be good to go to one of the big Lab club shows in the US and see them in the flesh Smile

I've been lucky enough to attend two Speciality shows in the states. They certainly believe in being substantial, as John points out, and the later dog and bitch classes are often quite an eye opener for any UK based folks there.

Clare have you watched the various Youtube footage of Westminster Dog Show, which is their equiv of Crufts? You might find it interesting....

Edited to say that when I was there in 2000 and 2002 the dogs were rather heavier, more like the 2008/9 footage on the above clips. The 2011 dogs seem fractionally less overdone and heavy. Thats good.

....The Potomac is also a good place to view the top dogs. Will try and find something....:

Winners gallery from 2011 seems to be at this link? Only thing being that the dogs don't seem to have their names attached to the pics? Maybe I just can't see for looking...
