Although slightly more formal, a good park for children - there is a park with swings and a very small snack bar. The gardens are gorgeous in spring and there are some good walks around the lakes.

12 miles north of Nottingham on the A60 and is also close to Junction 27 of the M1. If coming from the M1, follow the signs for Sherwood Forest until you see the brown signs for the Abbey.
hope this helps ...so looks like it is just parking to pay
We went last weekend and drove in, cost us £5 per adult dogs free and that gave us entry to the gardens as well, house was closed for fire checks or something like that. Hadn't been in the gardens bit before but some of it was nice for dogs some is just paths but round the back of the house where the rose gardens are theres more grass and lake type bits where peope were having picnics. Just through the rose garden there's a tunnel and round the back of the house this big square 'pond' I suppose I reckon it was a swimming pool for the grand owners of the house back in its heyday I don't think you're supposed to go in it but it struck me at the time how much fun the dogs would have swimming in it - Sam's not one for jumping in and was on lead (though you might have wondered when he decided to take off after a squirrel ) so didn't get in...! The other time we went to Newstead we didn't go in the gardens though we went round the grassy bits nearer the car park and then walked down past the house into the woods what irritates me is they don't seem to have a map of where you can go and where you can't and where they should be on and off lead so if anyone knows that would be kind of handy! Perhaps you guys who've been before know?

With regards to dogs on and off leads it is as follows....DOGS ONLEAD AT ALL TIMES...have just spoke to them and this rule has been implemented in the last week and a half after an inciudent in the park so if anybody wants to rethink ...maybe choose a different place ?....Not sure what to suggest .
Due to an incident in the park a week and half ago i have been informed whilst ringing up ro confirm where dogs can be on.off lead that all dogs must always stay on lead now with zero off lead areas.
Do people still want to go or do they want to pick a different meet etc how do people want to proceed. It seems a shame for the dogs not to be able to be off lead and have a hooley around.
I have pmed everyone and started a thread if people could respond on thread ...in lab liasions or gt thread so we can make a decision...im happy to go ahead with Gt if thats what people want to do. Also happy to rearrange if thats what people want...ie new location etc.
